The show was spectacular! I wished they had let Ledward play longer. Just in awe of all the music, dancers, and beautiful photography. A group of us stayed after until we were kicked out of the parking lot (had to chow down on some of that leftovers)! Nancy, of course, had her camera, so maybe she will post some pics. Glad to finally meet you, Wanda and Paul, am very glad you could make it. Thanks for the food! Wish there were more shows like this in our area! It was worth going to work this morning all bleary-eyed! Susan |

I, too, had a wonderful time, and I feel the same way about the show as Susan - I wanted more Led & Mike Ka'awe. Unfortunately, my sister had to be at work early Wednesday monring, so we couldn't partake of the after-concert fun. It was fabulous to meet all of the folks. I'm so pleased that I could be back on the east coast for this. Y'll come see me in Seattle any time! - Keaka |

What a swell time we had. First of all, we met up with Nancy and Prentiss, who were driving through the parking lot looking for someone to play slack key with and with whom to have a Kona Longboard. She found just the right guy! After hugs and kisses from those guys, then we met up with Ben and his lovely wife. More hugs and alohas. Then came Jack (slpry1) and his lovely daughter Mary and sister Jane. I think Jane wins the prize for who came the farthest for the show -- all the way from Japan! Then the New York Posse arrived - Claduia, Brooklyn and yikes, I can't remember who else. E kala mai. We had plenty, plenty, plenty grinz. We could put dem football tailgaters to shame. We had a pre-show kanikapila. Claudia led us in Henehene Kou Aka and then, oh, boy-oh-boy, my favorite -- The Owl's Lullaby. If you guys have not yet heard Claudia's sweet, sweet voice, you are really missing something. I tried croaking along with her. I hope she is not huhu I joined in on her lovely singing. Then we went up the hill for the show. As we were going to our seats, I heard a voice calling my name from the row just behind us. Two more Taro Patch folks, Suelou and her hubby Darryl. I think we had quite the Taro Patch representation there. We had folks there from Japan, Seattle, Cleveland, Rhode Island, New York and Virginia.
The venue is really spectacular. Acoustics were wonderful. They had three giant movie screens as back drop for the stage and as the show opened, there was a film of Led walking da beach, playing Punahoa Special. Next thing you kow, the sound swells to a great crescendo, the lights come up and there is Led playing live and in person. What an entrance, what a beginning! You just knew you were in for a treat. Led then played Opihi Moemoe and introduced the great 12-string guitar player, Mike Ka`awa - Hawaiian Boy. Mike sang his very beautiful He Wehi no ke Kai. And if you heard these two guys playing Sweet Georgia Brown - ho, man-oh-man, they blew the roof off the place. What guitar pickin'! But alas, the Led & Mike portion of the show was over all too briefly. I think they only played for about a nano second (well, that is what it seemed to me). I think they did 5 songs. Then came Robert and Roland Cazimero. If you appreciate fine vocals, there is none better, in my opinion. Robert is a perfectionist. We saw actual proof of this when he failed to hit a high note at the ending of a song. (Keep in mind, though, Roland hit his mark with no trouble). After the song was pau, Robert had to show that he could hit the mark, and had Roland go back to the guitar at the right place. Robert sure hit that perfectly executed note this time. Wow! They did a variety of songs with little stage banter. Robert said they were given 40 minutes and he wanted to cram as much music into those minutes as he could. Oh, when he did Wailele o Nu`uanu -- well, I could almost weep it was so spectacular. Their take on Waimanalo Blues was definite unique -- very jazzy. The words are just as powerful, whether it is done straight and simply or fancied up and jazzy. And you can bet that Robert made sure they had spectacular hula dancers. Oh, the hula was superb. I love kane hula, but the women he had dancing with them were graceful and precise. They all danced together superbly. Then it was intermission time. I climbed the kajillion steps to get up out of the orchestra area where we had seats, hoping that someone would be selling CDs. Nope. Nada. Nichts. Nein. A`ole. Not very nice, I don't think. For the folks who were there and knew nothing about Hawaiian music, this would have been a perfect way to get them to buy music while they were there and knew the names of the guys who were entertaining them that evening. After intermission Halau o Kekuhi presented the most spectacular hula I have ever witnessed. What a tribute to Pele. What a tribute to Laka. What a tribute to Hi`iakaikapoliopele. If I spoke better Hawaiian, I am sure I would have enjoyed the chants so much more. These folks did nothing but kahiko and chants for about 40 minutes. It blew me away that they could remember everything they were supposed to do. The pahu drums -- perfect synchronization; the ipu heke -- perfect. Every move, perfectly executed. This was hula! This is how it was meant to be. All the while, spectacular film of Kilauea were showing on the three screens behind the dancers. To see spectacular films of Halema`uma`u glowing, steaming while Halau o Kekuhi paid their tribute to Pele -- words cannot express.
And then all of a sudden, it was pau. And no hana hous for anyone.
So we hung out in the parking lot until the park guys sid it was pau parking lot time, too. Over all too quickly.
But, if you want a reprise, come to Cleveland September 27 for the Makaha Sons. We can have fun here, too.
And but of course, Wanda has pictures:
Jack aka Slpry1
Ben
The whole `ohana Wanda, Nancy, Paul, Ben, Jack, Claudia, Brooklyn
Soulou & Darryl
Wanda & Jack
Wanda & Nancy
My dearest hun-bun, Paul (rendezvous1840) who by the way played nice 12 string with the Owl's Lullaby.
This is the best pic I could get of Led & Mike. No pictures during performances, so when they were pau, I quick tried to get a pic while they were taking their bows.

fun meeting all the taropatchers! and thanks for the kona longboard.
rode around on the little golf carts serenading the wolf trap volunteer drivers. had fun hanging out with 7 hula sisters making the trip down from nyc.
we were there to hear beautiful music and support our beloved guy friends performing kane hula for the Brothers Cazimero.
after the show the handsome kane came up to bask in the adulation of their nyc ohana and give us the most beautiful leis.
there was a pretty teenage girl watching us and the kane talking. turns out she had been dancing for a year and was starstruck.
well, our handsome kane saw her, gaver her a lei and a kiss, such a sweet gesture!
great roadtrip, getting ready for a big weekend of hula in nyc with Michael C. and Karl Veto Baker's halau.

'Twas a wonderful evening indeed! Marred only by too little Led. But, man, what music he and Mike put out in their set. Just head-scratchin', jaw-droppin' magic! Had to be magic because it's humanly impossible to do what he did with six strings and a box. Bros Caz were flawless as always (Robert's little miss at the end notwithstanding). And the hula - so incredibly Powerful.
It was nice to see the other members of the Last AMC Class of Kaupoa and to meet the taropatchers I only knew through their posts.
Great grindz. Fun Kani. Much aloha. And a very politely put "go home now" when we were found hanging around after the parking lot emptied. |

I knew there was something I forgot to say. Roland must be getting in the same shape like Paul and I are, and da rest of us old futs. When he came out on stage to take bows when the show was over, he was walking with a cane. And if your legs hurt, that ride back to Hawai`i can be a bear. |

At the end of his show on Pakele Live and as he's about to leave the stage after performing "We Are The World", you'll notice Willie K bend down to pick up his cane. A sign of the times and a poignant reminder of our brief time here on earth.
If those two guys ever get better, maybe they can get together and do a different kind of "Cane Fire" album. |

Shoulda figured there would be some video of this out there on You Tube. This is Bros. Cazimero doing Pua Hone. This might be the guy who was sitting in front of me and filming with his cell phone. Looks like the angle we were sitting at. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE-OGeihU3Y |

Got a call from Mill Valley friend this evening -- he was at "half-time" of Led & Mike's Throckmorton gig and said they were really rockin' the place. And I found out from an O`ahu pal that Led bought yet another new guitar this week. He could start a museum!
And that cane of Willie's? It's because of da gout...plague of leading "the good life". |
