Don't forget that amidst Pele's rumblings and grumblings, this weekend begins the 2008 Merrie Monarach Festival.
You can watch it on TV. Here is some info.
----The 45th annual Merrie Monarch Festival will feature some of the finest dancers from around the Hawaiian Islands and some from the mainland.
KITV 4 Island Television will provide live TV coverage of the time-honored event on April 3-5. TheHawaiiChannel.com will also provide live streaming video of the event online. Viewers have watched the event live from as far away as Europe, the Middle East, Japan and Mexico.
Ten young women will vie for the title of Miss Aloha Hula 2008 on Thursday, April 3. Watch as the performers show off their talents in the kahiko (ancient) and auana (modern) dance.
On Friday night, watch kane (men) and wahine (women) halau (groups) dance the kahiko, traditional dance.
The event wraps up Saturday night with the kane and wahine halau performing their auana. It ends that night with the awards ceremony.
KITV 4 Island Television News will also provide a look at some of the issues facing the Big Island and deliver live reports during the festival.
Plan to join KITV and TheHawaiiChannel.com for three nights of the premiere competition in hula.

I am so very excited that I will be there for the first time in person. I am not a hula dancer. Just a fan. But this is something I have wanted to do for 20 years.

There's lots of Merrie Monarch information on this site -- including just-released lists of contestants: http://www.kitv.com/merriemonarch/index.html
Bill, take a seat cushion!! Those benches are painful...especially when you've had to sit for hours... |

NT Maria, thanks for the great link. Fun to see that Sonny Ching will be back in competition this year. Any clue who will be in free Weds ho'ike night? Last year a large halau from Japan took soooo much of the time .. Las Vegas costuming meets Japan meets hula. (Not my cup of tea.) I got very tired so missed the most interesting part of Sonny Ching halau performance. Anyway, feel lucky to have tickets this year as many didn't get them who usually do. |

Wish I could watch the Merrie Monarch Live in Hilo. I have been watching the Merrie Monarch on the tv for the past couple of years. The halaus that they had on there were great. I'll be watching it on tv this year again.

The Merrie Monarch is something that everyone who enjoys the Hawaiian culture, should experience. Not only is the hula beautiful but the chant and music is also unbelieveable. Unfortunately I'll be unable to attend again this year as my son participates for the 3rd consecutive year with the Academy of Hawaiian Arts, under the direction of Kumu Mark Keali`i Ho`omalu. |

Have you ever seen this side of Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu?
Be sure to watch his "Helpful Tip" towards the end.

Howzit Braddah Ed! Yes, I have seen that side of Kumu Mark and there is an entire series of these available for viewing. Had you had the opportunity to attend the recent "Ka Hula Hou" hula challenge in Hayward, CA you would have seen it first-hand... |

Led's sister (Lei) told me that Johnny Lum Ho will be part of Wednesday night's event -- and she's singing with him.
For those of you who may not know, Led's not the only musician in the Kaapana `ohana. When Lei and Rhoda join Led at his Sunday night gigs (Kona Brewing Company, O`ahu) it's such good fun!! What a hoot it must have been to have known alllllllll those Kaapana keiki, way back when.
And speaking of Ledward -- he'll be 60 this August. Now that's gonna be one GREAT celebration! |

Several years ago (three or more) I was at the first Snowbird Bento Merrie Monarch fund raiser at Aloha Towers (Kapono's?) when she had just formed her halau. I was totally blown away by Led and Rhoda. They performed together and it was great. They had a tough act to follow .. Na Palapalai. Thanks for the Johnny Lum Ho info .. look forward so much to seeing that halau as well as the Kanaka'ole Halau O Kekuhi. Wednesday night is one of my favorite events as it's a real Hilo moment.

Try read: http://starbulletin.com/2008/04/06/news/story02.html
Congrats to all the halau who participated. Aunty Mapu, sorry you and the ladies did not take top honors, but 5th is very good in both kahiko and `auana. |

The Miss Aloha Hula contestants were magnificent, all of them. But sincere congratulations to this year's winner, Cherissa Kane (and her kumu hula, Keali`i Reichel). Here's film of her `auana performance (check out those Ni`ihau shell lei!!): http://www.kitv.com/merrie-monarch-video/19205155/index.html |
