Hello again Pauline!
If you were looking for any MP3's of mine, well, I don't have any just yet. Perhaps when I learn how to create them first. Ha!ha!ha! I'm really not a whiz on these "cyber-boxes". I just do basic things with it. But certainly have alot of fun just the same!
BTW! Try going on HawaiianMusicians.com and check-out the Links! You may just find what you're looking for as far Hawaiian Music lyrics are concerned. Also, don't feel too bad, I'm the same way when it comes to remembering my favorite songs. Put some sheet music in front of tho, and i'll give it a go! Aloha!

Pauline!
Think sunshine and have a hot cup of coffee or soup available. Believe it or not, sometimes when i'm sitting on my upstairs deck during those early early mornings and late late evenings playing my guitar, It gets pretty cold too! So dawn them jogging sweats, put on a pair of socks, and just play your guitar. Aloha!

How'zit Everybody!
Being that I am new here, I just wanted to acknowlege all the rest of you "Hawaiian Slack Key Guitarists"! As you probably already know, I come from the Island of Maui, Hawaii. I come from the "Backyard Style" of "Slack Key Guitar playing".
Unlike all of you who can read "Slack/Tabs, I learned by watching Keola Beamer's Slack Key Instructional video. But the best teachers that I did have on a personal level were the ones I'd get together with to kanikapila. Kevin Brown, (Waiehu Sons/Three Generations), Don Kaulia, Keoki Kahumoku, Uncle Sol Kawaihauole and Pekelo Cosma.
Slack Key is my passion....I also do it to take the edge off after a hard days work. It really hepls me to relax, and just make me feel sooooooh good. When playing Hawaiian Slack Key, I use both steel strunged guitars as well as nylon strunged ones.
Mahalo for letting me on board TaroPatch.net! It's fun here! Heh! You know where to find me! A Hui Hou!
slackkey (Bill/Billy) P.S. The Martin SP3 strings are great! I have light/mediums on my old O-21 Martin Guitar.

Aloha e Bill,
So you *do* know Kevin and Uncle Sol. Great! We will visit with Uncle Sol in a few weeks and show up at the Bailey House. Does Kevin still appear there for the jams in the gazebo out back? Actually, do the jams still take place? We hear that Ikaika found a girl friend in Kahiki. Is that true?
Maybe we will run into you (figuratively speaking :-)

Aloha Ahi Ahi Reid! (translation: good evening)
Yes as a matter of fact, I know them very well! And no, unfortunately, we don't kanikapila anymore at the "Bailey House Museum. Everyones so busy! Especially Kevin and Ikaika. Several times I went up to check only to find out no one showed up.
Today however was special! I've been on vacation this whole week, and decided to go up "Bailey House Museum", to visit Uncle Sol, and took my guitar with me! Magic sorta happened....In the Gift Shop where Uncle Sol was finishing up his shift, inside was George Benson making Uncles last sale. He was there with Henry Allen the very well known Steel Guitar Player.
I got to meet the two of them, and had a great conversation about music. Then from the Gift Shop, Ucle Sol headed to work at the "Museum". That's when both Uncle and I took out our guitars, and began to kanikapila while on his shift at the Museum. While we played Slack Key together, the music had the same effect as did the "Pied Piper of Hamlin"! It wasn't rats, but alot of visiters from outtah State!
If you had been here today, you too would've had alot of fun! It was a very special time with Uncle. The time went by so fast for Uncle Sol, about four hours! Whenever we were in the middle of a song, visiters to the Museum would arrive. Then we'd do a concluding vamp, Uncle would greet, welcome the visiters then go right into the History Of the "Bailey House Museum". Soon after, we would get right back into "Kihoalu".
BTW! Have we met before during "Kihoalu" up at "Bailey House"? There were so many who have showed up to listen, to videotape and to participate! So I couldn't help but wander if we did meet at one time or another.
Ikaika has a Girlfriend? I didn't know about that one! But every now and then when I would make a stop at Safeway in Kahului, I would always see his Mom. She's works at the registers, and I would ask about Kevin and Ikaika, and how they were doing. Her response was that they're busy with the Entertainment Scene. They also traveled to Tahiti to perform! With the looks of things, i'd say they're very busy Traveling and Entertaining!
Oh! Before I forget to ask...When will you be at the "Bailey House Museum"? Your best bet would be to go on a Friday just after lunch. By then, Uncle Sol would be at one of the two places working. Or better yet, give the Museum a call during the beginning of the week and ask for Uncle Sol.
Unfortunately, after today, I'll be back at my regular work schedule. The earliest I can get away, is 3:30 in the afternoon on Fridays. By then, it would be too late. But hey! You and Uncle can still get together right? But we'll never know what can happen! Take care Reid, and keep "Kiho'alu" alive. A Hui Hou!

Oh, that is too bad. They were soooo much fun. I think Kevin was the "ring leader" and if he doesn't show, lots of others don't show either. Sarah and I were there one afternoon when there were 14 or 15 people, including Henry Meyer (Meestah Myah :-)and Bruddah Francis with a 12 string, Ikaika, Kevin, the bass player Kawika and lots of others. Wonderful time.

Ho! Bill, that must have been something! To meet those big time players, and then jam with Uncle Sol like that!

We might have. It has been a few years, because I had some major surgery and couldn't do anything, and then we spent some time on the Big Island. You probably wouldn't remember me, BUT, if you will look at Sarah's picture in her Profile on this site, you might recognise her. Her long blonde hair is hard to miss. Also, a tip off might be the benefit concert that Kevin dem did at Christ the King church, with Dennis Pavao a few years ago. Kevin's daughter sang an Amy Gilliom song better than Amy did. If you were there, then I was the guy sitting on the grass next to you.
quote: Ikaika has a Girlfriend?
Well it was just second or third hand information, but I was told he met some girl in Tahiti and was going back there to visit her soon. Just like in the old legends :-)

We will go there, as you suggest, on Friday the 19th of this month.

Bill, 3:30 or 4:00 isn't too late. You are in Pa`ia, right? That's just 20 minutes drive. Come by.
a hui hou,
Reid

Eh Good Morning Reid and Sarah!
Yes I beleive we have met, did Sarah play a song that day? There was one wahine I remember who played a nice tune. Anyway, I sat inside the gazebo with Kevin guys. Wow! That was the biggest kanikapila session I have ever seen!
The line of "slackers" extended from the gazebo, along the stone wall to the end, then came around back into the gazebo. If someone was to take an arial shot from above, it would've have looked like a strunged lei!
I really miss the "Kihoalu Jam Sessions" at the Bailey House. It has been awhile since the very last one we did have, and it wasn't with Kevin. It was just me, Uncle Sol, and Hal Nishida. But being able to kanikapila with Uncle Sol yesterday, and to meet George and Henry was the was an ultimate high!
I hope to be able to get together with you Sarah and Uncle Sol on the 19th. Stay right there I'll be right back............................ Okay,... I looked at my calender, and it looks like I'll be really late getting up there! Where I work we rotate our starting times (long story).
Like before, when we did have those "Kihoalu Kanikapila Sessions" on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I would arrive about 15 minutes to a half hour later. By then the kanikapila has already begun. But still got some play time with the kihoalu gang.
So come Friday on the 19th, I'll be pau work at 4:00 P.M. I'll try to get up there as soon as I can. But if for some reason all you have to leave, eh, no worries! Main thing you get to Kanikapila with Uncle Sol. But if the two of you decide to hang-out at Bailey House....i'm there. I'll be all dirty tho, a trip back to Paia and back especially on a Friday would take too long. The Traffic! Auwe!
So! Until he 19th! Or until we connect here.....Take care, God Bless, Good Health and Prosperity....and "JUS PRESS!!!!!! Kanikapila! A Hui Hou!

I have a Martin 0016C nylon string and a couple of steel string dreads (a custom Martin hd28 and a Washburn Prarie Song) which I use Elixer polywebs (light tops and medium bottoms - tuned to F taropatch CFCFAC); a grand auditorium sized Blue Lion steel string - Cherry/Cedar (Elixer Polyweb lights) and a Taylor 714CE-LTD - Cocobolo/Cedar (Elixer Polyweb lights). The Blue Lion was made by Bob Baker, the luthier who builds the Blue Lion Dulcimers - in Santa Margarita, CA (near San Luis Obispo). I also have Baby Taylor mahogany that I string with Elixer Polyweb mediums and tune to G taropatch.
I rarely play the nylon string as its difficult to adjust to the wider non-radiused neck after playing the steel string guitars. I use a large Johnson thumbpick (from Buffalo Bros) and Alaska picks on my index and middle fingers.

Hi Dusty, did I ever say welcome? Welcome!
I was sure you were going to say you rarely played the nylon because it was difficult to retune. That is always an issue with nylon.

Aloha Dusty! (wdf)
Hey, I never knew that Martin came out with a nylon (0016C)style classical! I have a 1947 0-21, it's my Treasure. How does the Martin 0016C sound? Hmmmm..I imagine it's got to be sweet. BTW! I'm from Maui Hawaii! And Slack key is my passion.
Just the other day, myself, two members from here,(Sarah & Reid)and Uncle Sol Kawaihauole, played some "Kiho'alu" at Maui's "Bailey House Museum". We had a wonderful time! Their guitars are especially some beauties!
Reid plays a Goodall's Big Goose Spruce/Mahogany G/C, and his Wife Sarah has one that was custom-made for her with a deep body I can't remember the Luthier! Oh well, it'll come to me. Anyways, we had so much fun yesterday!
Hey! Come and visit us on HawaiiMusicians.com! We're a Hawaii Based Slack Key Website. "E Como mai!" Oh! about your F Taro Patch Tuning....at first I thought it was something new. Then realized it's a tuned-down open G Taro Patch. ha! ha! ha! It took me by surprise! That's what happens when one 's just in the beginning stages of "Kiho'alu". But just the same, I love it.
Don't forget to drop-in HawaiiMusicians.com! Take care! A Hui Hou!

On the nylon vs. steel - I've been saying nylon, nylon, nylon, but just now I tuned a newish steel string down to Taro Patch and tried some slack key on it, and suddenly I'm not so sure! I think that guitar is finally opening up; it had the steel string chime that I'd been missing, so sweet. Or maybe I prefer dead strings. Choices, choices! |

Aloha,
I bought my Martin 0016c new in about 1965 or 1966. It is very sweet and has a STRONG bass response and ok treble response. It, as is most classicals, a 12 fret model with a typical classical width neck.

Dusty,
Looks good. (I really like that door, too!)
Have you tried carbon trebles to brighten up the tone? I have on a guitar that didn't need it but haven't yet on the guitar that does.

Hello there Pauline! How you been?
Eh, Dusty, that's a really beautyful guitar! Nice contrast with the door behind it too! The body of your guitar is very similar to my 0-21. I never saw a Martin Nylon/Classic until now! By looks of it,I can imagine how nice the action is. Question: Does your's have a neck adjustment rod? Mine's don't, I guess the idea of some means of adjusting was'nt important during that time. Oh well! Aloha!
