Nope, no adjustable truss rod. The neck seems pretty straight though.
I'm not sure if that's quite the problem that it is on steel string guitars.

Eh Wassssssup wdf (Dusty)!

It deffinitely sounds like my Martin too! Well, several years ago, I had to have my guitar's neck worked-on. The way it was done, was with some sort of press or something. Anyway, the neck was off a little causing my strings to buzz at about the 13th, 14th, and 15th fret. In other words, if I was to go up the scale, the 13th, 14th, and 15th would sound the same. As soon as I passed the 15th, then I could continue going up the scale normaly.

Well, my guitar seems to be at that stage again. Whenever I attempt to
run up and down the scale, the 13th, 14th and 15th fret would ruin it.
But other than that, the guitar still sounds really nice. BTW! Are those Martin Nylon Classic Guitars still being made? I've yet to see one here in the Islands. I have a Yamaha Nylon Classic....it's my beach guitar! Whenever I head to the beach, it's with me. A Hui Hou!

Hi slackkey Bill,

I just looked on Martin's website, http://www.mguitar.com/, and the only nylon string guitars I could find were Willie Nelson signature models. Martin did have a license from Thomas Humphrey (Humphries?) to build his Millennium model, but that agreement ended recently. Maybe I didn't look in enough of their nooks and crannies, but I don't think Martin is doing much with nylon today.

I think, not sure, that Godin's La Patries have adjustable truss rods. Taylor recently issued a nylon string guitar and the odds are it has an adjustable truss rod. Some one man shops build with truss rods, and some may be adjustable. It's pretty uncommon in classicals. The Spanish factories don't add them but they will reinforce the necks in other ways. For instance, mine has a strip of ebony in the neck as well as an ebony fingerboard.

With my limited knowledge, I wonder if your guitar needs a neck reset. A trussrod won't prevent or cure that problem.

There are a bunch of acoustic guitar gearheads you could ask at Acoustic Guitar Magazine's website, http://www.acousticguitar.com/ubbcgi/Ultimate.cgi.

Another fantastic site for guitar information is run by super-luthier Frank Ford at http://www.frets.com with clear close-up photos and plain understandable text.

Aloha Pauline!

Yup! My Martin deffinitely needs to have something done! And you're probably right about a neck adjustment. The first time it was done, it was placed on some press-thin'ga ma-gig. I remember the process was really long. But when I got it back.....hohhh so sweet!

Dusty's Martin is very similar to mine! Same body type, and everything else! Only his is the Classic Nylon, and mine has Steel-strings. The Tuner-head is shaped in the same "Old Style" too! As far as the making of those Classic Nylon style, I guess only a few were made.

Oh well! Hey! You're pretty good in accessing the problem on my guitar! You sound like a repair person! Really! BTW! Thanks for those websites! I just love looking at different guitar Luthiers. Have you heard of Steven Grimes? Check-out this website: www.grimesguitars.com.
A Hui Hou!

Yum-yum. Thanks for the link.

I looked to see if he made a 12-fret steel string (standard scale, dropped bridge), but no. I guess I'll stick with my Martin which I've recently come to love, too, for slack key. I don't think my budget could handle his lovely creations.

BTW, I don't really know that much; I just have a knack for parroting back what I've learned on the web. Too bad it doesn't work on motor memory, like guitar playing. :^(

Oh yes, Goodall's are nice. I have a friend who plays one. And the link worked.

I live just a few miles from an ex-Hawaiian guitar company, RainSong. All the employees who came over are shivering here in the Northwest. They loaned us 4 of their factory seconds, cosmetic problems, so I got to play them, and I really like them. They outclassed my steel string Martin. Well, they should for the price. Now that they are here, they should replace the shark inlays with orcas. The name is still appropriate, maybe even more so.

Aloha kakou

Has anyone seen the new Taylor "Nylon" series guitars? Bob Taylor says their goal was to make this nylon-string guitar a "bridge" whereby steel-string players could experience classical guitar tone, but in a package that they feel comfortable with not only in terms of playability but in overall familiarity and comfort with the aesthetic design. I am very excited after playing a couple of them and definitely plan to get one soon. It will be a great compliment to my Taylor 312ce which has a similar body. The Taylor guitars quarterly "Wood and Steel" has a cover story about them with lots of info.

Aloha no, Kawika

Aloha Kawika--

I went to Bounty Music in Kahului specifically to check the new Taylor out and they had sold the only one they had. I was then in Honolulu and went to Island Guitar and they hadn't gotten any yet. Where'd you sample yours?

Aloha Duke

I went to Bounty Music on May 1st and they had 3 of the new nylon series Taylors. They had a Maple, Sepele, and I think the other was Indian Rosewood or it may have been the Ovangkol. I was at Island Guitars yesterday and they had one Rosewood. According to what I read in the Taylor Quarterly "Wood and Steel" they just started production the first of January and it takes a while to fill all the orders for the hundred or so dealers they supply. Apparently they are selling fast and don't stay in the store long. I plan to get the NS312ce, but will sell my Ovation Standard Elite first.

A hui hou, Kawika

Aloha e slackkey, from around the bend, or two or three or four....Naah, I'm definitely NOT pro, strictly amateur. I play here in Hana with Noenoe Hula Ohana. We do a show twice a month at the Hotel Hana Maui. Very laid back, nothing like Old Lahaina Luau kine entertainment. But tons of aloha :)

I was hoping to come and join you folks at Bailey House couple weeks ago when Andy, Reid, Sarah, Kawika, etc met there, but the drive out and back on a weeknight just didn't work out and I think it was a night we had a rehearsal for our hotel show here. Well, one of these days I'll make it up. Say hello to Ed B for me. The beach jam sounds cool to me!

Thanks for the welcome note-- A hui hou, Duke

Bill and Duke, you guys are killing me with all that Beach Jam around the fire kine talk. It reminds me of the late afternoon and night Sarah and I spent with Kevin, Ikaika, Sheldon and the rest of the Brown `ohana at Waihe'e Beach Park. Waves pounding, Portagee sausage and eggplant and onions and spam and spicy sauce on top of two scoop rice. Oysters warmed open on the hot rocks of the fire place with shoyu dropped on. Sarah and Kevin and Ikaika playing kika and singing; Sheldon playing his `uke. The stars and the moon shining on the water. Fire warming the outside while food and music warmed the inside. Ho ka nani!

me ke aloha (and a bit of jealousy),

Reid

Eh how'zit everyone!

Wow! I ust got on the computer, and was happy to hear from all of you. Braddah duke from Eastside! Eh you buggah....no lie Brah, you sound Pro to me! Ha! ha! ha! How is everything down there? I haven't been to Hana in almost 5 years! Maybe even more! Auwe! I think the last time I was there was around 1985-86. For real! I was doing the Hana Tours then. Since that time, I have not reached there since.

Now I get one good reason fo go. I'm thinking about making the journey to meet up with you at down Hana bay. Maybe not this weekend or even the next. I still got more dismantling to do. And when I do hele on down to Hana, I like get one early morning start.

BTW! Me only Backyard-kine slack key. My favorite tuning is open G or Taro Patch. I do try the other tunings as well, but usually spend more time in taro patch. Mo easy fo me! I do sing, well, I TRY to sing. Brah....az long as I get some words in front of me I going try. I'm just now starting to 'kanikajam" He' eia. Been trying to learn and kanikapila this song for some long time! Every morning while on my way to work, I listen to Dennis Kamakahi's way. Of course I reallize he does it in C I believe. But I stay trying in in open G. The pa'ani's mo easy for me in open G then in C.

Reid! What you mean....at least you guys when Kanikajammapila with Sheldon guys, and had one real ono pa'ina too! Wow lau lau....I must have been some place else when you and Sarah was having a great and scenic time with Waiehu Son's! Auwe! How come I no wuz invited! Nah nah nah....just kidding, just kidding. You guys must have been down by the Pavillions. Now az what you call one for real-kine Hawaiian Slack Key kine 'kanijakammapila.....nice afternoon....early evening with the stars out, moana in the background and the surf pounding! That is deffinitely the deffinition to living in Paradise. And da ono kine grinds!

Pauline! The temeperatures you guys have there....BTW! Where do live in? Anyways, the temperature being in the 60's is something I wish we had alot of here in the Islands. Although I love the sunny weather, but I yurn for the cool temperatures you have there. As summer gets really close, the days are getting much hotter too. I live just a short walk away from the beach, but this El Nino weather is contantly changing the weather and ocean conditions. So I'll have to settle for the waterhose.....ha! ha! ha!

Well gang, I'll be headed out now, need to take care of other things today. Actually, I may just kick back, and 'jus press Paia style instead, go to the liquor store and pick-up some brewskis. Hmmmm....the rain stopped, so I'll probably go out on the deck and relax kiho'alu styling away enjoying a cold one. Take care all! See ya when I seesya!

Dakine....Braddah duke we should get together some day, and az probably going be when I head your way. Bum-bye I let you know!

Pauline! Reid! Sarah! da Duke! A Hui Hou!
