BACKGROUND Stephen Inglis’ first album’s “Fringes on the Wayside” and “Driftwood”, utilizing slack key tunings on guitar, lead to his studies with Slack Key Master Ozzie Kotani. Under Ozzie, Stephen quickly gained recognition in the Ki Ho’alu community, performing locally and nationally as a solo artist, and with Ozzie Kotani, Makana and others. Stephen’s latest release “Mahina O Wai’alae” according to John Berger of the Honolulu Star Bulletin “…evokes memories of Keola Beamer and establishes his credentials as an artist who can sing in the old island style as well.” Shawn Livingston Moseley was raised on the North Shore of Oahu. A pianist since age 4, shawn was nationally ranked in the top 10 by age 8. Leaving Hawai’i to further his studies at Berklee College of Music, Boston, he has since worked as a music producer and engineer with Dave Matthews, Metallica, and Ron Levy to name a few. Now president of ‘Aumakua he has dedicated himself to supporting artist of Hawai’i while pursing his long anticipated solo career.
Cindy Combs, internationally recognized slack key lady, from her first release “Land of the Endless Summer” established herself as a corner stone artist in the Hawaiian music and Ki Ho’alu Community. Since, her latest release “Sunny Rain” on Dancing Cat Records, Cindy continues to perpetuate her musical mastery on guitar supported by her unmistakable voice. Cindy has extensively toured and performed to audiences local and abroad.

Hoping to see a lot of the Seattle-area folks at Town Hall this next Friday night, to hear something a little different from Hawai`i.
S+S is the duo of guitarist Stephen Inglis (who has three slack-key based albums out) and pianist Shawn Livingston Moseley. Their debut album, "Na Po Makole - The Night Rainbows," is not a sound you've heard before. They have started with some traditional styles and sounds and structures (such as ki ho`alu), but taken their music off into paths that have touches of jazz and new age as well. The piano is an equal partner to the guitar (again, different from what you are used to in music of Hawai`i), and the original compositions that result are beautiful and enticing.
I've written an album review that will be in the May issue of the Northwest Hawai`i Times, but you may not see it in time to catch their concert at Seattle's Town Hall on Friday, May 2.
Also on the album and touring with them for the concert is the incredible "slack key lady" from Kaua`i, Cindy Combs - yet another reason not to miss their Seattle gig. Tickets available at www.brownpapertickets.com. (If I see you at the show, come say 'aloha' to my mother, who will be in town that weekend, too.) |
