If you are within driving distance of Seattle, plan to attend the Northwest Folkife Festival over Memorial Day. It's huge, it's free... and you will hear music from all over the world, dance yourself silly, and, if you are like me, eat way too much delicious street food.
Check out the schedule here: http://www.nwfolklife.org/P_F/festival.html
There are numerous changes to catch Hawaiian groups, including many with familiar nom de 'nets like Thumbstruck, Slipry1, Retro, Momi, Neej, etc etc etc.
For some reason it appears all of the Hawaiian programming overlaps on Sunday.
Here's what I'll be doing on Sunday:
11:00-12:00 -Shaw Room. I'm hosting a round-robin slack key workshop with Kory (Thumbstruck), Al (Noeau) and whoever else remembers to show up. NOTE: This workshop is not listed on the printed program. Ooops.
2:40 Northwest Court. Come check out Charanga, a Galician bagpipe and brass band. Not even remotely nahenahe... I do play a bass the size of an `ukulele, tho.
7:00 Cafe Imromptu. I'm doing a solo slack key and`ukulele set as part of a bill called "Six String Samurais." Sounds like fun.
Hope to see you and 10,000 of your closest friends...

In that vein (thanks for the opportunity for personal horn tootage, Mark), here's the performances I'll be in, all on Sunday, May 25:
2:30 pm/Bagley Wright Theatre - Hālau Hula O Napualani Playing bass for the first of the four hālau at the big hula show.
5:30 pm/Charlotte Martin Theatre - Da Oddah Guyz Playing bass and some `ukulele; this band also includes thumbstruck, slipry1, noeau, and falsetto2002.
7:05 pm/Charlotte Martin Theatre - SUPA/Seattle `Ukulele Players Association Playing ... well, bass again. You get 30-40 ukesters on a stage together, you gotta have something to hold the rhythm. Might be me, might not - who can say?
(Both of the last two sets are part of "Ukenalia" - running 5:30 - 7:30, for which I will also be the emcee.)

That bites. Online, it's under the "participation" schedules, rather than the "performance" ones, but the printed program is missing the Shaw Room workshops on Sunday only. |

And I'm going to dump this in here just so folks understand what a hip ukin place Seattle really is..... I am working with a group to bring a festival to the Seattle Center in Sept. the weekend after Bumbershoot(man if you're not from Seattle I can't explain it). It is called the Live Aloha Hawaiian Festival. There will be music and dancing as well as cultural stuff in many different rooms. We don't have it all wrapped up(not even close) but I have to believe there will be uke stuff there and probably someone playing a lot of the time. I will let you all know as we have more "MEAT" on the subject. Eh Poi Dog time to come up and debut the new song to the public!!!!! |

I'd like to subtract Momi from that list (I goin' be takin' pitchas) and add Noeau, Falsetto 2002, Iwalani and Mahina (and possibly Baritone and Rich Smith if they perform with SUPA) to the list of TPers performing. I'm hoping to see lots of TPers there, performing or otherwise. Puna? Hapuna? Dr. Cookie? Javeiro? Nai`a? Mark E? John? Tree Weeks? GS, you guys stay comin' o wat? We gotta make our own fun in Seattle since some people who shall remain Wanda and Paul will actually be in Hawai`i during that time (yah, I jealous, so wat?). |

What a schedule! If I didn't have the baby, I'd fly up there for the weekend. The only thing I didn't see was a Guatemalan marimba band. |

Momi - wait a minute. Who went home for a wedding? Who made da uncle drive all over everywhere looking for scrapbook papers?
Speaking of which, my daughter broke her lucky cat that I brought her last time, so I've got to get her another. Must not have been so lucky the cat.
But this festival in Seattle sounds like a swell fun thing. Sounds like a big to-do. After the newspapers write it up, send us links for read about.
And, Momi, dear friend, lotsa pics. Mahalo. I want to see Braddah Ed. |

Maybe the cat "deflected" something unlucky that was headed for your daughter (I've heard tales of that being the case with omamori).
Folklife has been going on since 1972, and I've been involved since 1985. I produced live radio broadcasts (local & national) from there 1985-1998, missed the fest 1999-2000, then been back as a performer every year since. Momi & I had our very first, second and third dates at the 1995 celebration, and even have a commemorative tile on the grounds to celebrate that (everybody say "awwwwww ....") As you can probably guess, it's a big part of my life. It takes over the grounds of the entire Seattle Center (home of the Space Needle), and is free of charge (though donations to keep it so are strongly encouraged). It's huge - attendance averages around 200,000 people for the weekend.
There is a long-out-of-print CD of slack key that was made largely from our broadcast recordings at the 1993 festival (and we're hoping it might get reissued next year), featuring Ray Kane, Ledward Kaapana, Mike Kaawa, Pekelo, Haunani Apoliona, Gary Haleamau and Milton Lau - Krash Kealoha was the emcee. The festival's website is: http://www.nwfolklife.org
As for Braddah Ed --- we've tried to get pictures of him before, but for some reason, the "witness relocation aura" seems to defeat us. |

I emailed 'em about that---got a reply saying they did indeed have an attack of gremlins in the printing, but will be trying to get the missing info out a number of ways, so folks will be informed |

Day two pictures:
Rod McCrimmon, Jake Galbraith, the Malihini Boys from Victoria, B.C.
Tim Miller and Brook Adams, part of the Swingin' Marmalukeys, from Eugene, OR.
Steve Bader, Brother Noland, Vergel Jepes.
Evidence that Kory is the human embodiment of the Energizer Bunny. Look at how many jam buddies he lasted through:
Al, Kory, Jack.
Kory, Carl, and unidentified dancer.
Gregg, Art, Joe, Kory.
For all I know, he's STILL there jamming!
Lots of Hawaiian stuff going on tomorrow. |

Not in the photos, but also present at the jamming: Maggie & Chico & Mark (oh, my!) - some of the Oregon musical mafia. (BTW - this is Retro, not Momi; I didn't feel like logging her out just to add one comment.) |

Yet again proof that we live on the wrong coast :-(
Oh well, we went to the Tony Rice Unit concert a few weeks ago, and get to see and hear the elusive Dave Bromberg with Angel Band, in concert, in 4 weeks. Both up close and personal. All different strokes, and certainly not personal participation, but these things keep the juices flowing - those that are left - as Sarah had to give up a gig (for personal reasons) for the CT Bar Assn., which was a downer.
Howz come all we got around here are pro things - like the Newport Folk Festival?
You guys are all looking really good and everybody is jealous - at least I am.
Al, that `ukulele is gorgeous - is that ebony binding on koa?
Susy, what is all that decoration on the top of your guitar? Don't remember seeing anything like it before.
...Reid
