can someone recommend an instruction book or collection of slack key music written in standard notation- as opposed to tab-

I think all of Keola Beamer's instructional materials have standard musical notation. Off the top of my head, these books all have standard musical notation:

Not sure what kind of recommendation to make. It's dependent upon whose musical style you like, your level of playing, etc.

I would definitley take a look at Mark Hanson's book...standard notation along with tab and a wide variety of slack key pieces in different styles, ranging from beginner/intermediate to advanced.
