Aloha kakou:
Can some of you who live onna Big Island Kona side give me a vog report? I'm coming over (woo hoo!) on June 2 and would like to know how it is, as I have some problems with asthma. I'll be staying on Ali'i Drive in town. Praying fo' clearing trades,

Hi Cathe, The vog level has been between 4 and 5 for the last few days (10 being the worst). I have a vog page on our web site: http://www.konaweb.com/vog Which has a lot of information on it. There is also a phone number you can call after 10 each day to get the "vog level", although by 10 am, you can pretty much tell what the vog is up to. If you can see a sharp horizon, there is very little vog. If you can't tell where the ocean and sky meet... expect to start feeling it in your eyes, throat, and sinus cavities!
Down near sea level is the best place to escape the vog. Up where I live, it is a lot stronger.
Aloha, -Konabob |

I stay on Ali'i Drive (Kona Tiki) off and on for 2 1/2 weeks and never saw what I'd consider to be a "normal" sunset, altho sometimes the sun was a red ball near the horizon, which was interesting. Often there was an overhead haze from mid-morning to late afternoon. I developed a little cough and I'm now sure how the folks that have breathing problems can persist on a day to day basis By the way, I found the Konaweb.com (visiting Kona section) to be invaluable. You can read about the vog, seeing manta rays, kayaking, restaurants (a separate section), etc. Well done Konabob - Altho I could never figure out when you played at the Kona Country Club. |

I think its hilarious that you learn all that stuff about the Big Island from KBobs website but can't figure out when he's playing around town. |

Well, that has to do mostly with the fact that they call me up and say "Bruddah Bob, you want to play tonight?". So I don't bother to put it on the web. I played last night at the Vista in Keauhou, and they asked me to bring my steel back tonight. It's 5 pm and I haven't decided. Just got back from an all day trip to Hilo, and kind of tuckered out! But I still might go on down.
I can always be found on Wednesday Nights at Sam's Ukulele Gallery in Holualoa, where we have a kanikapila from 6 to 8. Usually 30 people or so show up, and I play bass for that event.
Best way to find out what I am up to is to email me and say, "Konabob, are you playing this week?". Aloha, -Konabob

Being a volcano enthusiast, I regularly check out this website, especially when I'm getting close to being on BI. Be sure to look at "images." Wow!

One of these trips I'm destined to see live lava up close. Alas, it hasn't happened yet.
