You Tube – Week of July 13, 2008
Here are some goodies that I found on You Tube this week:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=rqmN-hGcg_4 Posted by Taro9World, a gentleman from Japan. Very lovely guitar playing. Did he change keys in the middle of the song without retuning??? If you would like to see more of his stuff, here is his page. Mostly I think Japanese music, but os so beautiful. http://youtube.com/user/Taro8World
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ArQS4pHQcxo – From Lanaki9, an original composition entitled Summer Country Slackin.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=y9RU2kRAS3E – Here is our own Taro Patch braddah, sbar15, Steve Barlow. Very nice Steve!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vczWx_dwbds&feature=related – Pineapple Princess on `ukulele by Hawaiiansweetrtoll
http://youtube.com/watch?v=bmYTdqcjwfM – posted by ballles1000. These guys are wonderful on the `ukulele. They play so very well with each other. I especially like the addition of the one guy playing “bass” `ukulele. It sounds so very deep and resonant. How does he get that sound???? I think maybe the song is I ka Po Me ke Ao.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yJeKYJml52U – Jim Earp playing Just a Closer Walk with Thee slack key style.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=UCI9oiWEYD0 – from Las Vegas, the top 7 count down from Hawaiian Music Pipeline to Paradise. From the more traditional side of the music are Weldon Kekauoha and Hoku Zuttermeister.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=WU97oqXSCPs – This is listed as Keali`i Reichel singing Kawaipunahele at MacArthur Park in LA. I thought I remembered from the 60’s that MacArthur Park was in San Francisco, no? This may be the concert that the head of our local hula hui went to. Her husband bought tickets for their anniversary and surprised her with a trip to California to see Keali`i. Is that nice or what?
http://youtube.com/watch?v=S711JUMeL40 – Pearly Shells played by a harmonica quartet.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=yMTBybGxgvk – Another little blurb reminding you about the 19th Annual Big Island Music Festival which will be held next Saturday. Lucky if you are on Big Island next week. This blurb features Auntie Diana Ako. Oh, what a voice she has. One of my favorites. Auntie Diana Aki, known as the "Songbird from Miloli'i", is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner who will be performing at the 19th Annual Big Island Hawaiian Music Festival on Saturday, July l9, 2008. She invites you to come to the festivities in Hilo, Hawaii at the Hilo High School Auditorium. The Festival is a presentation of the nonprofit arts and culture organization, The East Hawaii Cultural Council. For more info or tickets to the Festival: 808-961-5711 or arts @ ehcc.org
http://youtube.com/watch?v=IN3aETNaThI – Gracie Allen & Eleanor Powell. Gracie is singing “Honolulu” from the film of the same name from 1939.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=wVPkdjlfknM – posted by Candelas Guitars. A lovely couple play8ing & singing at the guitar store on a handmade Cadelas `ukulele. Very fine. Charles & Ilima are the stwo. Here is more: http://youtube.com/watch?v=2iKazMigWC0
http://youtube.com/watch?v=Y9U1LrqY3uA&feature=related – This is Ohta-san, yes? Playing Sukiyaki
http://youtube.com/watch?v=QUNzerdH9Is posted by Iz69 – playing `ukulele and singing The Tears are Falling Down

Hi Wanda,
Mahalo for the videos. I recognized Charlie Kiaha and Ilima Lei Russell (3rd video from the bottom). They are cousins and their group is called "Moana." They're from Southern Cal and periodically come up to the Bay Area to play--most recently they were the host band at Temple Bar's Aloha Sunday/Open Mic in April, http://www.templebar.org/eventdetails4.htm . They are a wonderful duo with beautiful harmonies, and Charlie is an excellent guitarist (mostly standard) and ukulele player. I believe Charlie mentioned he is a Kamehameha grad.
Sil da Trill, GUke, ArtSap and I met them when we performed at the open mic. We had a great time. Come to think of it, Charlie said Bruddah Art looked like he's from Da Syndicate. Rough looking da buggah when he put on his mean face.
Aloha,
Doug |

Well, if you remember the 60's... you weren't there!
Don't know about SF, but there is a MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles.
And yes, it has rained once or twice in LA. I have no idea why any idiot would leave a cake there, though. |

Jim Earp is a local legend here in San Diego. He is a fantastic finger style guitarist. Our own Bill Benzel is frequently seen performing with Jim. Bill has persuaded Jim into including some slack key stylings in his music, as seen in this video.

And if that idiot DID leave one there, it would be truly tragic to see all the sweet green icing flowing down.
And it would be gigantically more tragic to have someone like Richard Harris sing about it.
But I don't remember any of that stuff...

I'm not surprised it's stressful for you, I heard it took so long to bake it.

One word that describes my condition in the 60's - "Huh?" I HATE that song (if I can remember it at all)!! A good thing about MacArthur Park - its south side is Alvarado, home of the most amazing and thriving collection of mercados, second hand stores, etc. Also, if you drive east to Beverly Blvd, and north to Rampart (not very far), there's Tommy's! (YUM, YUM).
