I'll be visiting Oahu for two weeks, starting today. I want to hear as much slack key as I can, maybe take in an open mic and get a lesson or two. Any suggestions? I'm really looking forward to this!!

Slack Key Sundays at The Marriot in Waikiki. The band is George Kuo, Martin Pahinui, Aaron Mahi, and Bobby Ingano. And nearly every week, some guests come from the audience to sing, play ukulele, or dance hula. They start about 6:30 or 7:00. Also, Eddie Kamae, Mike Kaawa, Ocean Kaowili (The one Wanda calls CUTE!), and Paul Kim. Again, no telling who will turn up. Last year, several Taropatch members were in the house, and Fran Guidry joined the band for a few songs. Check the Friday newspaper for more, some good music can be found nearly every night, though not always slack key. Chai's Island Bistro has music nearly every night, over the past few years we've seen The Brothers Cazimero, The Macaha Sons, and Jerry Santos.Last time, Jerry had Barry Kimokeo and Hoku Zuttermeister with him. Also, check players web sites for their latest info. Ya never know who's in town or who's in the audience. Paul |

Hey Paul
You forgot to mention the slack key lesson you got from Harry Koizumi. Maybe you can forward the contact information to Eric?

Harry has a web site and you can e-mail him through that. He will answer you back promptly. What a nice gentleman. http://harrykoizumi.com/ I think the lesson was pretty reasonably priced, maybe $30 for a half hour that turned out to be a lot longer than a half hour. Maybe Paul had to stay after school. And if you take lessons from Harry, do not forget the wonderful music store downstairs. |

Yeah, Harry kept me for remedial lessons. He said if I couldn't come back regularly, I might as well have plenty to work on untill I do get back. Sorry ,I meant to mention the lesson.I was trying to remember everything, and ended up forgetting anyhow. Now that the hula school is off until mid september, I'm trying to incorporate slack key into the hulas I do with the school. At least, when I don't get side-tracked. Today at lunch I tuned to open D and tried to remember what Duke and Jay showed me of Kuu Home O Kahlu'u. But that's a good side track. I also need to work on a couple songs for the Underground Railroad presentation in the Park this fall. Those are in english, and more familiar style of playing; should be relatively easy. Paul |
