Hello All,
My name is Dave but my family calls me Kawika. Born and raised on Maui, came to Oahu after high school to go to college, and stayed here. I have lurked here intermittently for a while, then Wanda saw some youtubes I posted and invited me to join. I live in Waipahu now with my kids as a single Dad. One of my hobbies is restoring and collecting film and video, hence the youtubes. I knew there are people out there would enjoy seeing some of the rare footage that I have. I do play guitar, but only in open-g since I am cursed with small hands and short fingers. Braddah Duke has seen a clip of me playing and says I should post something on youtube. I dunno about that...maybe one day if I get my camera and mic and fingers to work good. If anyone has questions regarding the videos feel free to email me directly at dnrhand @ aol.com or post a reply here.

Eh Kawika - e komo mai! Your videos are really so very precious. I know that one of our taro patch braddahs was taught a bit by Auntie Alice and he was happy to see that film. For me, seeing Puamana danced by the family members of the lady who wrote the mele, well jeeze, for me it just does not get any better than that. To hear the haku mele explain the song in English is beyond compare. And it is very interesting to see that two ways I was taught to dance it differ so much from the way her `ohana danced it. They are all so precious and really do need to be preserved. You are doing important work, work that will live on on history. Thank you for working on this important and immense task.
And no be shy about talking story with us. You will learn quickly that Auntie Wanda is very niele. Like for instance, Braddah Ed (guavasunrise) always wants to know when you had your last prostate exam and what is your blood type, oh and no foget da colonoscopy. Me, I just want to know where you wen grad, how many chirren, stuff lidat. Also if you are young enough for one of my daudahs. Ha-ha. Only kidding, girls, only kidding. Mama is not trying to pawn you off on just any old unsuspecting gentleman. I have standards.
(E kala mai, when one gets to a certain age, I guess one wants to be a grandma.) |
Me ke aloha Malama pono, Wanda |

Mahalo plenty to Wanda and Guava for the welcome. It is my pleasure to uncover teasures and amuse people interested in Hawaii history. My goal in life is to preserve these artifacts for future generations. Sadly, many precious hours of historic Hawaii film and video have been already lost due to lack of foresight. I have personally witnessed some of this. So I started first by preserving my personal family films and videos. Then I applied it to other collections. If you explore my youtube videos you will find a film of me taken when I was 1 year old in 1956 sitting on my Mother's lap at Iao Valley on Maui. Geez, I guess that makes me too old for your daughters, eh Wanda? By the way, my sister learned to dance from Emma Sharpe waaayy back.
Other bits of trivia, I wen grad Baldwin '73 and I have been unconciously avoiding that colonoscopy exam. Got 4 kids but 2 are adults.
Here is a video I call "Keiki Kanikapila". I made up the music about 2 weeks ago when I was watching my kids playing at the beach on the North Shore.
