From 50 first dates.....the Beach Boys' -- Wouldn't It Be Nice.
And at one of the films on you tube of one of the `ukulele festivals on O`ahu, I think Roy Sakuma or Byron Yasui had their haumana playing "Wipe Out".
Also, maybe Tequila because of Peewee whatever his name was.
I think Hollis Brown by Bob Dylan has only one chord. |

I have taught a lot of people to play uke and taught my mom's senior citizen uke club one time. Almost no one can replicate Iz's strum on "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" without months or years of practice, including me. Please don't take my crack about white people having trouble with the reggae strum as a slam, it's just my own experience. With practice, anyone can do it. But it is hard if you don't grow up listening to the various reggae rhythms. Jesse Tinsley |

this is all great, thanks!
i should tell you want songs i've done (i don't do all of these every time): 26 miles across the sea, help me rhonda, brown eyed girl, surfin' USA, under the boardwalk, surf, help me rhonda, i'm into something good, ghost riders in the sky, neath one big tin roof, keanae, hukilau, drop baby drop, dream a little dream, yesterday, tiny bubbles, surfer girl, sloop john b, she'll be coming round the mountain, my girl, margaritaville, jambalaya, i feel fine, let it be, honolulu baby, home on the range, havana daydreaming, tropical hawaiian day, hawaiian war chant, eight days a week.
i really like the idea of reggae! there's some great songs there. no woman no cry is a great choice, as is three little birds.
craig, you're right about the awe jake raises with while my guitar gently weeps. they love it.
wanda, nice ideas... marko has some nice instrumentals of classic surf songs, and i think we may try one of those this quarter...

This is a great topic for me. I just started a Ukulele club at the middle school I teach at in Union City, Ca. Had over 30 kids 11-14 show up wanting to play the uke! Most don't know how to play so song ideas are great. Next question, what are some of the resources you use for the words and music? I have some, and I need to check with folks I have gotten music from at various camps and workshops. What other sources have people used?
Thanks for the info.
Mark, I'll be seeing you in Napa next week. What about you Keith? Teri |

Ah Keith,
Check out the Wine Country Uke Fest thread. There is a link there. Should be fun for one and all. You can fly up for a weekend in the wine country?

Here are some other ones I've learned: Something Hey Jude Stir it Up
And not necessarily for your class, but if you'd like to expand your collection of songs in 'olelo, I picked up "Blossom Nani Ho'i E" by myself. I can make a recording of me singing and playing it if y'all are interested. |
