In the Sons of Hawai`i recordiing of No Ke Ano Ahiahi, at the beginning Uncle Moe is saying something in Hawaiian. The only thing I really recognize is "ho`omakaukau". Can anyone else tell me what he is saying and also provide a translation. It is not a chant, per se, but sort of sounds to me like what I would envision a warrior saying to get folks het up for a battle.
"E nā luina! Huki mai i ka heleuma, e ho'omākaukau e holo aku"
Sailors! Weigh anchor and prepare to sail.
It's simply a shouted command. Kenneth Makuakāne did something like that in his recording of Hōkūalaka‘i and I've heard similar things in other songs for or about the voyaging canoes.
