Now I know a lot of you folks are going to say "Duh" at me, but who is Randy Lorenzo (besides a swell singer)? We've got a couple of CDs that have one or two songs that he is on. One is The Panini Collection, where he does Hula Girl and another is Hula Big Island Style, where he does the same song. But I love the voice and the jazzy stylings of the song. The best I can gather is that one time or another he was part of the Peter Moon Band, is that correct? I found a solo recording of him on mele.com, but auwe, out of print.

Can anyone enlighten me and point me to other recordings he has made (especially if there is something solo).

Mahalo for any kokua.

Randy has been around for a long time and played with lots of different people.

A couple of years ago, when we were in Kona, Randy was supposed to come over to our condo one evening. He showed up, guitar in hand, the next day, two hours late. When I openned the door for him, he met me with a sheepish grin and the statement, "I guess this is a bit late even for Hawaiian time." In the few hours he sayed with us he showed me some amazing things to play, and was had some great, dish-ey, talk story. One cool dude.

And appeared the Gabby Pahinui Band featuring Ry Cooder LP that included "Moonlight Lady" Try ask Bla about him.
I also remembah he was da bass player for Cecilio & Kapono too way back during da stoney daze. Yeah, Randy Lorenzo's been around long time backing up planny different musicians and is also one outstanding solo performer too as he demonstrated during one of da earlier shows on Pakele Live.

My youngest daughter was in the car when Island Love came ontop da CD. She was shocked that I would listen to it. Well, 'cept for da dope ting, nice song. I really like his voice. She said mother, it is speaking of marijuana, like I don't know what is cannibis or however you spell it. Just because I did not partake back in da day does not mean I am ignorant!

I have oft wondered about that song, though. Purpose for putting the cannibis thing in there? Good song with out the reference, no? But I guess it is simply documenting what was going on at that moment in time.

Mo bettah read Emily Dickinson, "Inebriate of the air am I and debauchee of the dew...."

'zackly.

When I started doing the Hawaiian music programming for Muzak years ago, I couldn't believe that song was in rotation.

"Any CD's that have his medley of "Hawai'i Aloha" and "Aloha 'Oe?"

Only on his 1996 solo CD (long out of print, unfortunately). He was living on the mainland at the time -- very, very homesick. You can hear a heartfelt emotion in his voice, that I've not heard on anyone else's recording of those songs. Love his "He Moana Ke Kai" (Hawaiian "The Water is Wide"). And his "My Hula Girl" is bouncy and delightful (as was the music video from long ago.

Here's the CD, in case you want to find yourself a used copy:

No, you not mistaken brah. I remembah Dennis Kamakahi composed and performed "Sweet Weuweu" wit da Sons I believe was back in da late 70s, and da lyrics are even listed at Huapala.org. Try listen to dis song sample performed by Palolo (mahalo Auntie Maria! ). It's one really good fun song and I tink would fit right in wit da rest of sirduke58's repatwah. Braddah Jay can even do da sound effects fo da police siren at da ending. You remembah dat song now eh? I remembah Moe Keale was in da Son's version too.

I hope Duke does not add it to his repertoire. Better sing about ho`onipo or aloha or something nice. I love Dennis very much. I highly respect his talents as a haku mele. Songs like Wahine `Ilikea, Koke`e and Pua Hone are some of the most beautiful, poetic songs I have ever heard and speak of an emotional maturity way beyond his chronological age at the time. However, when it comes to the dope ditty, az y hahd.

But please, I did not mean for a conversation about the great voice of Randy Lorenzo to turn into a marijuana reminisce.

Does anyone know what he is doing lately?

Of course, everyone is entitled to their own personal preference...

...but to love someone along with all of their innate musical and poetic talents is to love them warts and all. If you prefer, you can place them way up on a high pedestal to be looked at and admired, but to me they're just regular, normal people just like you and me with all of our normal human frailties -- on the same level as us, no higher, no lower -- except that they're exceptionally gifted at what they do, in the same way that you Wanda are exceptionally gifted at creating your own crafty greeting cards from scratch. Fo real. Those pakalolo kine songs are just a different facet of their musical repetwah, a facet that you don't see very often. If by chance you ever get da privilege of attending one backyard-style kanikapila wit dese musicians where no Youtube cameras are allowed, you going be in for one very eye-popping and bubble-bursting experience which would make those "dope ditty" kine songs pale in comparison. Try ax braddahs Duke and Jay. They've only let you see their good "PR" side so far.

And now, back to Randy Lorenzo...

His name came up at dinner tonight - someone Randy's working with contacted a friend of mine about getting him gigs up Seattle way. Said friend is going to pass on the details to me - I'll let you know when I learn more.

`Kden. I think it is settled. Mr. Lorenzo needs to make some new recordings or re-realease da old one. Ta-da. Simple enough.

And Braddah Ed, what you said about warts and all, you are right. I cannot pick & choose what parts are OK for me to like. Gotta like da whole ting. Like I learned in government contract law class -- cannot pick which part of the contract you going adhere to and which part to ignore. Gotta adhere to da whole ting, ery clause.

I just hope those who did dope can now sit back and listen to these songs they thought were so swell and so profound and hear what they sound like. But it is a documented history, though. That does make them valuable for that rason, even if not musically the best.

PS: Where can I find the lyrics to Cane Fire?

Wanda, the lyrics are in the liner notes of the "Cane Fire" CD.
