Randy has been playing Saturday evenings at Kaleo's in Pāhoa (Hawai'i island). We were pleasantly surprised to see him take the stage after we had dinner there one evening a few weeks ago. I chatted with him a bit between songs and was disappointed to learn that he didn't know if or when any of his solo releases would be available again. I'm planning to take the family back down there for dinner later this month and hope to see him again.

Duke - that is why I wanted to get the lyrics, because I was totally surprised to hear (see) you say it was a dope song. I just thought it was about burning the cane fields. I knew that happened but I did have trouble understanding why it was such an emergency when they found "the cane was pushed to the ground". I think maybe the helicopter thing had me wondering, too. But they do talk about got hungry children to feed and you gotta do what you gotta do.

I guess they planted it among the cane like in W. Va., they plant it among the corn crops to hide it.

I only wanted the lyrics to study the song -- educational purposes, you know. When I look at Martin Pahinui now, it is very hard to reconcile in my mind him singing that song. When I hear him singing Pua Lilia with the sweet voic, when he hugs you and kisses your cheek. No wonder when I saw him at the Marriott and asked him about Cane Fire" he said he could not sing it, that George would have a conniption, that they only did traditional Hawaiian music, az y called Slack Key Sundays.

Keola - if you go back there, please tell him how much we enjoy his music and offer him our mahalos and aloha.

Me ke aloha
Malama pono,
Wanda

When I was at the Hilo Airport the Sunday morning after Merrie Monarch, Randy was playing in the waiting area with a very, very good trio.

I have Randy's "I'm Going Home" as a cassette, and it has always been one of my favorites to listen to. Luckily I bought my copy on a trip to Maui many years ago.

We also saw Randy playing at a fund raiser our radio station did a few years ago. He was on stage with John Cruz and Owana Salazar. What a fun time that was!

He also has a solo instrumental song "Nai'o" on the compilation album "Slack Key Guitar, Volume 2"

The version of "My Hula Girl" that he does on "Hula, Big Island Style" is different from the original version he did on his album "I'm Going Home".
Little more acoustic. Both versions are great.

"The music of the Hawaiians, the most fascinating in the world, is still in my ears and
haunts me sleeping and waking."
