In the early 70's I spent a lot of time in Hawai'i, as I had a sweetheart living in Lanikai. We went to several concerts and I started buying LP's by Gabby, Ohta-San, Olomana, Home-grown, Keola. Recently I took my LP cover of "In the real old style" to a concert and Keola signed it for me after a bit of ribbing.... Why I waited so long to start trying to play ki ho'alu, I don't know. Maybe part of the problem is that I never knew that smaller guitars were available. I could not comfortably get my arms around a full-size guitar. All the men in my family played guitar, in fact, I was in a rock band with my brother in the 60's. (I played key-board.) Once I started playing ukulele it dawned on my I could try a guitar as well, if I could find one small enough. Baby Taylor to the rescue. I'm just having the time of my life now.
Aloha, Julie
