Last night, Feb. 13, Mele 'Ohana of Oregon presented 'An Evening of Aloha' at the Lane Events Center in Eugene, Oregon. Featured artists were Kumu Hula Pekelo Day & Halau Hula O na Pua O Hawai'i Nei, Steven Espaniola (on slack key guitar and ukulele), and Herb Ohta, Jr., who wrapped up the evening with a inspired, funny, and heartfelt performance on Ukulele. What a splendid evening for all! All the performers provided different elements that brought joy to the audience. Herb made it all the more fun by inviting local musician Buck Mueller on stage to join him in a ukulele duet. Nice touch! Anyway, today continues with the Oregon Asian Celebration, with demonstrations and workshops throughout the day. It's wonderful to see this type of entertainment growing in popularity and availability in our little slice of the world!

Was it "Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi"? First time we met either of those two wonderful guys, they played it together. |

Yep! That was the one. Herb said they first performed it, spontaneously, at a workshop in Seattle about 4 years ago. At that performance, David Kamakahi also joined in. Fun times!

It was a magical moment, that's for sure. That was when we first got to meet Maggie, Buck, Jesse, Herb & David, among many others - all due to the efforts of Patrick Landeza and Susie Kagami.
The Eugene show must have been chicken skin! |

Mahalo nui to everyone who came out to the concert and workshops in Eugene! Heard that a few people drove 200+ miles to be a part of it...amazing! Thanks to Maggie and Mele Ohana who were incredibly hospitable the entire trip. The Asian Celebration was one of the best organized festivals I've had the pleasure of being a part of. Mahalo Susie for handling all the legwork and logistics for us. Herb and I have been friends for a while, but this was our first real concert together and we both had a blast! Looking forward to next time! A hui hou...
