I've been hired to play slack-key guitar as part of a Hawai'i themed wedding in So Cal...I am compiling a list of songs that I already know and a few others that I want to learn... These are not for the ceremony, only for the reception..
Can I get some more suggestions on Hawaiian love songs/wedding songs that will be suitable?
So far I have: Ke Kali Nei au (of course) Maile Lei E Ku'u Morning Dew Ku'uipo Blue Hawai'i Adios Ke Aloha Hula Lady Akaka Falls Lovely Hula Hands Lei Pikake Sea Breeze Nightbird Kanaka Wai Wai
Most of the rest of my list so far are popular "covers" done in a slack key style, such as: In My Life (Beatles) Something " I Will " Longer (Fogelberg) L-O-V-E (Nat King Cole) The Very Thought of You " Can't Help Falling in Love Happy Together You Are So Beautiful Pachebel's Canon in D
S'posed to fill 3-4 hours, so da more da merrier... Any other suggestions? Mahalo in advance...

"Lei Aloha Lei Makamae" is listed on huapala as being the original Hawaiian wedding song before it was supplanted by Ke Kali Nei Au. Maybe this would be a good one to learn?

Kihei de Silva has written a very informative and entertaining article about being the "wedding reception police" when it comes to Hawaiian songs. You may want to read it as: http://web.mac.com/halaumohalailima/HMI/Wedding_Music_Police.html
But I like "E Pili Mai" and "Only You" and "The Road that Never Ends" |

I've always been fond of Wahine Ilikea and the analogy of how a woman slowly reveals her beauty in the lifting fog (honeymoon). I always get choked up when the artist remembers the bride and grooms parents with God Bless Mt Daddy and followed with Mom. |

Funnier than you realize - give a listen to Teresa Bright's version of "Tahauala" on her new CD, "Tropic Rhapsody" - it IS a love song! |

Yep you are correct, original title 'Kaua I Ka Huahua`i' about a meeting between two lovers. But we always make a joke about it when performing for tourists just because of the title and it sounds like a battle song.
Other possible songs. I guess could be anything nahenahe. Some of the nahenahe stuff we do. We sing these songs but I guess anything could be adapted to instrumental if that's what you're looking for.

Nothing regular, but when I say 'we', I was part of a group that did polynesian shows for conventions and special events and emcees would make those jokes since no one really knew any better. For that group I was just a tahitian drummer. No names as to not incriminate myself or the group.

Hmmmm....After some thought on my original list, as much as I love "Adios Ke Aloha," it doesn't seem to be very wedding-appropriate.
...and many more thanks for all the input on the topic!
an excerpt from the English translation:
"One kiss As cool as a dew drop, will do O belle of the ice cold mist Here I am, your lover Returning empty handed"
....how about "Ke Anu E Ko Mai Nei?"

T-Dan, Paul Togioka is a great slack key player on Kaua`i. He does a lot of weddings and has a website with a list of a lot of his tunes. Check out http://www.paultogioka.com/ |
