This week Pakele Live! is proud to feature 2006 Hawai’i Music Award New Artist of the Year Steven Espaniola (6 pm), and Kumu Hula Ina Colson (7 pm).
Although raised in Aliamanu, Hawai'i, Steven now lives in the San Francisco Bay area – so we don’t get to see him here in Hawai’i nei as often as we’d like! Steven plays ki ho’alu (slack key guitar), ‘ukulele, and bass, and excels at leo ki’eki’e (falsetto). In addition to winning the 2006 Hawai’i Music Award, his debut album “Ho’omaka” (produced by multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Dave Tucciarone) received vast critical acclaim. (Note: Steven and Dave will join forces again later this year to work on a 2nd album, one that is very anxiously-awaited by his fans!)
Joining Steven on stage will be Brian Hill on guitar, along with Kekoa Kaluhiwa (Holunape) on upright bass. There may be some special guest appearances as well! Photo credit: Kristin Slipson
Kumu Ina Colson will play in the 7 pm hour. You might remember him from his Pakele appearance last year, when he played on the same bill as HAPA! Kumu is currently working on CD project, which he hopes to complete this year. (Kala mai – by press time I hadn’t yet received info regarding who will be joining Kumu on stage, but you can be certain that members of his halau will be there to dance!)

Please join us Thursday, February 25th at the Pakele Lounge in the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu) from 6-8 p.m. HST. (Park FREE next door at Ala Moana Shopping Center!) Pakele Live! is always free, and all ages are welcome!
If you can’t make it in person, watch LIVE online at http://www.pakelelive.com/. Those in Japan can watch online at http://www.j-wave.co.jp/

Does Pakele Live ever archive the concert stream for viewing again? I can never make these concerts or the live streams but would like to watch them. I know OC16 has it but it's not the full deal.
Thanks, Ho'okani

Kala mai - I've had a lot of folks ask me the same question, and unfortunately we can't do that due to RIAA, copyright, and record company and other royalty-type infringement/licensing issues. I don't know if Pali and Tony are still working on trying to get clearances or not (I'll ask 'em). I've also had folks ask if they could buy copies of a DVD for a certain performance, and we're not equipped to do that, either (same issues).
You can be sure that if we ARE someday able to post the full concerts in a play on demand format (or make DVD's available for purchase), I'll let everyone know!
In the meantime, sometimes the artists themselves (or their friends, with permission) post a song or two on their myspace or Facebook pages, but not the entire show...
Sorry! Wish you could come (or at least watch) - it's always so much fun! |

Thanks Lynn. Was curious, how do you folks go about getting the talent for the shows? Do you come up with a list of performers you want to invite or by public request, combination of different ways.
Thanks, Ho'okani |

Well if you're really, really nice to da publicist, buy her lunch at Ono's or a cinnamon malasada at Leonard's, etc., she could put in a good word... (JUS' KIDDING!)
It's a combination - we book established artists and newbies and folks kinda in between. Sometimes we invite, sometimes they request (no guarantees there, though), and Tony just made the mistake last week of asking on air for public requests - eek! His mailbox probly filled fast (a few people emailed before the show even ended!)...
Are you on facebook? Or why don't you email me (lynn @ mkaloha.com), and we'll talk more... I've listened/watched your youtube vids, and really like 'em! |

Actually wasn't asking for me (I think I'd be too nervous and shame but thanks for the compliment though) but was just curious to how it worked, like if I wanted to see some group in particular or knew of some undiscovered talent. I'll hit you up on email if I get more questions, just being niele.

Aloha, yes, still working (waiting to hear regarding the rebroadcasting of archived performances).. technically, we cannot allow for archiving and rebroadcasting on youtube etc.. but as the net is, the net, it's hard to police this, and until there were complaints-this issue wasn't a priority-"legally" speaking. We cannot nor will not sell dvds/cds of the performances due to all the issues with mechanical lic., copyright etc.
As far as how Tony and I pick them, normally we try to balance featuring up and coming groups, to ones with an established name, to ones with a HUGE name, and ones that have had much positive buzz and may have a project coming out soon. Normally we only consider folks that have a CD in release or will be releasing soon. Also, for those that have been in request (Abrigo `Ohana, Kamaka Fernandez), we also try and fill these. We've asked just about everyone you can possibly think of, and only one has really turned us down. A few can't due to scheduling conflicts but do support Pakele as much as possible.
Aloha |

I just talked to Tony, and he said we'll rebroadcast tonight's show (one time only!) on a specific day/time. I'll let you all know when as soon as I know.
Kala mai! We apologize for the problems with the internet feed - I had lots of messages waiting for me when I got home, and there are a bunch of disappointed folks out there! The show was great - and Herb Ohta, Jr. sat in at the end of Steven's set for two songs. It's one you won't want to miss...
I'll keep you posted! |

Big mahalo to everyone who attended in person and those who attempted to connect online! Will definitely let everyone know as soon as the re-broadcast is scheduled. Was a fabulous night as Brian, Kekoa and Herb sounded incredible. Was nice to see some familiar faces like Herman, Lynn, and Ed from Eugene...Also nice to see my musician colleagues in the house...Kenneth Makuakane, Chris Lau, Ben from Taylor Guitars and the Kanile'a gang! Lastly, big mahalo to Pali, Tony, Brad, and the legendary DJ Pratt for making it sound maika'i no! Thanks for making my trip to Pakele an unforgettable one.
Steven
PS...this sounded like a Na Hoku speech...hmmmmmmmmmm? Check out the pics on Lynn's facebook page...Mahalo nui for all your kokua Lynn! |
