Sadly, after many years, it's time for the South Bay Open Mic to come to an end on a monthly basis.
It's been a wonderful experience. The music has been marvelous. Watching the growth of so many talented friends has made the time well worth the effort. But, what was once a vibrant forum has become a trickle of a few dedicated people who always "show up". You know who you are and I hold you in the highest esteem and love.
Mahalo to all of you for the makana of music and the friendships we've made along the way.
Pau hana,
Dave Nye

I guess things do run their course. Sadly so. I want to take a moment to also thank everyone who participated in this experience over the years. My original goal in pulling this together was to create a venue which would help each participant grow as a musician. That has happened beyond all of my expectations. I especially want to especially thank Dave who did a great job of keping things going. I also want to apoligize to the "regulars" for not being there much since we adopted Kevin. Kevin is a wonderful kid and the true joy of our lives, but he did have a tough time in his first year of life - loosing his birth mother and two foster mothers, being transplanted here in San Jose with strangers. My wife and I both curtailed most of our other activities because we felt that Kevin needed us with him a lot. Last year he also had some real medical problems, not life threatening, but difficult for a baby/todler, that complicated the picture. I'm saying this just to let you know that the reason I wasn't there was very important in our understanding and in our hearts. And I trully missed being there but always hoped I would return on a regular basis. So.. time to give thanks, grieve, and enjoy the music as it goes on. Raymond |

Beeg Dawg! Bruddah, if we didn't have the whole Golden State between us I would've been more of a regular. Mahalo planny for that one session couple years back when I was able to come up north. It was a pleasure to play that night. Mahalo for all you've been doing for ki ho'alu in the Bay Area. You da man...or da dawg...or both. ( o )====::: |

Thanks Dave and Raymond for the good times that I had attending some of the open mics. After retiring and moving south to the central coast, I realized how much I missed the gatherings. I learned from many of the regulars and miss the company of each of you. Good luck to all and I hope our paths cross again. |

Just got back from a trip away from town and away from the web.
I am sorry to hear that the open mike that Raymond started long ago at the Expresso Cafe and that Dave has kept going for some time has run out of steam. I think the economy has had some effect on the situation. It certainly has in my case, having to work late, even on one of the open mic nights.
I would like to think that our gatherings for performance are on Hiatus (or Sabbatical if you wish) and will reappear (much like I wish my investments will reappear!) someday.
Thanks to all who participated!!...

Mahalo Dave. I truly appreciated the opportunity to start performing with the spotlight on you. Kanikapila is great but the heart doesnʻt race the same when everybody plays and sings along. As Lawrence expressed I do hope this venue will reappear. Folks in the Bay Area may know of other open mikes, but still itʻs not the South Bay Open Mike. Mahalo and a hui ho to all that Iʻve met here.

Dave, and Raymond,
Thank you so much for all the good times we've had, made possible by you two and others stepping up to the plate. I miss knowing that, should I have the time, to stop by after work and play a little, make a fool of myself, and laugh a lot with old and dear friends. I know that we will keep in touch with each other through other avenues, and I'm looking forward to being able to say thank you in person. Just know that I think you're the greatest, and that Larry and I both really appreciate your hard work. Kudos to you!
Hugs, Julie |
