I found some pretty darn swell stuff this week. My burning question is who da heck is Harold Kama, Jr. I found some of his stuff and I was mightily impressed by his talent. He's on this week's list.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMjOy07aXrA Uncle Richard Ho`opi`i teaching a workshop and singing “Hawaiian Rainbow”. I don’t often get to see stuff from him. How excited I was to see this. I love this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xw1Oa7p_qrc – Uncle Dennis, Uncle Richard and Uncle George making some of the nicest music. Wow.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEgb8Qy13Wc George Kahumoku – “Mohala”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QvuF44ZzwU – George Kahumoku – “Aloha `Oe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw4X_Z6h3LQ – Slackkey808 – Zack is playing “He Po Lani Makamae”. I really like this song. I first heard it on one of the Makaha Sons’ recordings where they have other folks joining them. This one is sung by Sistah Robi. Can tell how old I am when I call her “Sistah” and Zack calls her “Aunty”. I apologize to Zack for forgetting to include this beautiful music in last week’s postings. Mahalo Zack for your wonderful ki ho`alu.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nGpvcOJHShI – my friend Yoshi from da Big Island playing “Moe `Uhane” He moved from Japan to Hawai`i a few years back and he is working very hard to learn not only English but `olelo Hawai`i.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5Nl42zFnug – Here is is playing and singing Ku`u Ipo I Ka Pu`e One.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwQj0Iy5Kvc – This is our Taro Patch braddah, Bolo playing in Hilo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tad0T3R5Tow – Led Kaapana playing with Timi & Emily Abrigo at Led’s workshop last year. Emily has got her falsetto going!

These next few are good examples of traditional style Hawaiian music without playing slack key.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiIcmoU1Hc0&feature=channel_page – Kaaeamoku playing and singing “Dreams/Ahe Lau Makani medley. I really, really like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RorysQw1sxw – E Ho`i I ka Pili
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYw3bjn7tE4 – He`eia This is my favorite. I have never heard it done in “tight key” before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeF5hYMvtrw – Hi`ilawe

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocIK5xMYmj8 – Kanaka Waiwai

I don’t know who da heck, but WOW!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLVhptBXhTE – Harold Kama, Jr. doing Hi`ilawe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9EsaeHNWSU – Kamuela Cowboy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFvfqCH4iGE – Queen’s Jubille – by Easy `Ukulele

Harold Kama, Jr. is a very talented musician -- for awhile in the mid-90s he played back up for Willie K. His dad was (is?) a musician, too.

Jr's roots are in Hilo, but late last year I heard he was living on O`ahu, had a day job, and was gigging occasionally.

That guy can RIP on guitar, and has an awesome falsetto, too. Only released one CD...long out of print now:

Wanda, "He Po Lani Makamae" was written by Robi's sister, the talented haku mele Ku Kahakalau -- and first released on this CD by Robi in 1997:

Moonie, John and Jerry were the backup musicians on Robi's recording.

Here are a couple more that are worth watching:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXlcYAlaJPM - Josh from Maui (Mauibuilt75) - Moloka`i Sweet Home

And this very touching, sad, yet strong look at Princess Ka`iulani, with quotes in her own words. Beautiful background music by Hapa. A wonderful choice of song. This film is done by Hokulani78

I fixed Hokulani's link above as he made some changes to the original video to make it easier for old folks like me to read. Every time I watch it I get chicken skin. It makes my heart ache.

Braddah Al - I saw that way back, it is from 2002 May Day show by Bros. Cazimero. Don't it give chicken skin? Man, can you imagine such a show? We saw Roland & Robert at their last May Day show at the Shell. What a show it was. Thanks so much for pointing this out once again, it is worth watching over and over.

But boy, would I like to hear them do Pua Lililehua.
