Who wrote this song? It is on Iz's E Ala E CD, but it does not say who wrote it that I can find in the liner notes. Paul said it is on one of the Nedward CD's we have, but cannot find where it is.
Any searches I did on internet kinda, sort say Iz, but I do not know if they mean that he actually wrote it.

Not sure on the author but I'm pretty sure it wasn't Iz. Other's who have recorded it are Hui Ohana and Melveen Leed.

The first recording was the composer's. Al Nobriga released it on his 1976 LP "At The Top Of The Outrigger." Hui Ohana's version came later that same year on their "Ono" LP (the version that appears on their "Magic Islands" hits collection.)* The next recordings were Jesse Nakooka's on the "54 Bridges To Hana Town" LP, Al Stroud's from "The Boy From Waipio," and The Surfers' version on the "Shells" LP - all from 1977. Then Melveen Leed's in 1983. Iz and Nicky Boy's versions bring up the rear.
We are also overlooking versions by Island Breeze and Larry Rivera. I regrettably don't have those versions, so I can't date them.
*(Hui Ohana's 1988 version was the live version. Why didn't Led tune up for that recording? Or was Tahiti weather wreaking havoc with his guitar?)

Those are The Surfers to which we refer. The line-up changed slightly over the years, but the same group that recorded those LPs for Hi-Fi/Life Records in the 1950s and 60s and then more for Decca in the 1960s (as the Hawaiian Surfers) went on to record for several other labels through the early 1980s. The group always included the Naluai Brothers.
I had the pleasure of performing with Pat Sylva - who is still going strong - last year. He is a monster on both the piano and vibes.

Yep, I can still remember the first time I saw The Surfers perform at a nightclub in the International Market Place back in the late 60's (I used a fake I.D. to get inside  ) and thinking, "Wow!! I didn't know Hawaiians could sing like that!! These guys belong on the Ed Sullivan Show!!"
For me, their rendition of David Kupele's "Jungle Rain" will always be da best. |

| The third surfer from the left was married to Melveen Leed for a while. Their four part harmony was awesome. Also I worked on Kauaʻi for a coupla months in !969. There was live music at the hotel and I think I heard the song Hele On To Kauaʻi sung by the group playing there. They were a local family and they were solid lounge lizards. The hotel as I recall was called the Castaways. |

| Bruddah Ed, I probably poured your drink when you saw the Surfers! I was a bartender in the Canton Puka working with the Surfers from '68-'71. The group then was Alan and Clayton,Pat Silva and Joe Stevens.Sadly Alan has passed,Does anyone know what happened to Joe?? |

Oh so it was YOU da one who poured my drink! I remember you now!  Yeah, dass da place, the Canton Puka! Brah, Joe Stevens is still around. Check out this Surfers reunion photo taken just a couple years ago when they were honored at HARA's Lifetime Achievement Awards in March '07:
