For real? I've been reading the online Hawai'i newspapers every day since they came online and never saw any mention of Joe Stevens' passing.

Braddah Ed............Tanx eh,I really enjoyed reading about the guys.I wonder why they didn't mention the Canton Puka?? They were the House show in '68-69'or longer. I moved on after a dispute over whether my drink was water or Vodka and Shave ice.............

I think it was because that was one really long time ago for most peepos. I ran across one noddah website run by Hawaiian music entertainer Manny Fernandez (link) where he mentions The Surfers too but he also couldn't remember the name of the Canton Puka:
quote:
"There was only 4 of them, Clayton, Alan, Pat and Bernie Ching, when they were in California. When they returned to Hawaii, this was the group. This sign was on the Kalakaua street side of Int'l Market Place, ''DON THE BEACHCOMBER'' and they all played there. Then Kimo McVey took over the place, and changed the name to DUKE'S, and Don Ho opened there. THE SURFERS went into another venue within Int'l Mkt Plc, just can't think of the name of it then."
So no feel bad brah. I couldn't remembah da name until you mentioned it.

While watching the opening of the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards online last night, they flashed photos of those who had recently passed away. Among them was Joe Stevens, in 2009, and also to my surprise -- Pat Sylva, in 2008. May they, along with Al Naluai, all rest in peace.
