Auntie Wanda was moved out of ICU today, and is asking the Dr.'s to let her come home. They haven't given a concrete answer yet, but "maybe tomorrow" has surfaced. She is feeling strong, now that the fluid is gone and she can breath and her blood is flowing good again. No apparent new heart damage was noted. Paul |

Auntie is home! I am just getting ready to take a nap in my own comfy bed. Sure could not get any rest in the hospital. In ICU, they did stuff around the clock. It did not matter to them that you wanted to sleep. I had ultrasound imaging done at 4 a.m., blood work drawnevery 4 hours around the clock. I have seen what my kidneys look like via ultrasound, what my bladder looks like via ultrasound, what my heart and heart valves look like via ultrasound. I've learned the finer points of shishi of what it is made of and what I no longer will be able to eat to keep my kidneys healthy. Oh, and the kidney doc told me that I am young enough that I could be considered for a transplant. I thought I was way too elemakule fo dat.
Bottom line: diabetes is a very ugly disease. On the face of it you wouldn't think so, but oh, it is way ugly, just laying in wait, ready tipounce, just like a spider. I would say everything bad I have had happen to me health wise has been a bad by-product of diabetes. Funny thing - this time, my blood sugar was as good as it could be, but now kidney damage has manifested itself. The fluid around my heart and in my lungs happened because my kidneys are so compromised that my body cannot get rid of all the poisons that it needs, so the fluid uilds up in places that it shouldn't. When it gets to the lungs, the fluid replaces the room that I had to take in air, so in essence, it is almost like drowning. Not a pleasant feeling at all, I must say. But one big doseage of intravenous diuretics fixed that problem quickly. Then they found severe anemia which is caused by kidney deterioration. So now I get to have a weekly shot of viamine D into my somach, I get to take iron pills so my body can make more red blood cells. The kidney disease may be slighly reversible, but for the most part, is a continual declie. According to my kidney doc, he said it is all about how quickly I slide down that slippery slope to kidney failure. If I eat right and behave, then I can stave off problems for a longer amount of time, because he said, even with 30% usage of my kidneys, the body still can take care of itself if we give it all the things it needs to do the proper job.
So how does one come to Hawai`i andeat food without salt? What about shoyu? And worse than that, other foods high in potassium are no good such as bananas and tomatoes. How can I cook spaghetti sauce with no tomatoes? Ah, az y hahd, yeah? We will make it through.
Thank you all for your kind wishes. You seriously did bring down my blood pressure -- it was an amazing thing to behold.
I love you guys. Yep, Ed. Here comes the kleenex again. |

Tita Ma,
It is good that you're home again. Yes, diabetes is a nasty disease. Unfortunately our mouths are killing us so we all have to watch what we eat, how much we eat and exercise regularly. Take care.

Welcome home and back to da lo'i, Auntie. Good to see da doctors been let you out on early parole once again. So did da dietician actually say no salt, or low salt? It's one important detail that braddah Duke dem guys going be needing to know so that they can try adjust their recipes accordingly using no salt, low salt, or salt substitutes for when you folks fly ova deya in just a couple of months. I know it's a doable thing. You just gotta readjust the mindset to adapt to the new cards you've been dealt. Life is still good. \m/ |

I think salt substitute contains potassium, which may be a bad thing for kidney patients. Extremely low salt is the only way to go. Almost imposible to do with restaurant food. At home, we can control it a lot better. We look for no salt added canned goods, avoid canned as much as possible. After heart surgery, Wanda was told no more than 1 teaspoon of salt per day. That includes what's contained in ingredients and used in cooking. We have to get back to that level again and maintain it religously.Restaurant dining is lible to be a thing of the past for the most part. Vacations may be a problem. We have to find ways to control both sodium and potassium now. Some fruits may be on the restricted list. Glad to have my sweetie back home. Paul

Aunty Wanda: it's so good to hear you're home again. Peter is right--we have to be careful about what goes into our mouths. It is possible to eat healthy in restaurants and on vacation. What it takes a is a will of steel to order the green salad instead of the pasta with alfredo sauc, or the hulihuli chicken, or the spam musubi. And remember -- anything in Hawai'i is going to taste better just because of where you are!! |
