It so happening to go online and find all of these forums especially the the Waihee Slack Key Ohana still going....
I saw Braddah Kevin Brown the other day at Sam Satos...how nice to know that the Saturdays have grown for the the troopers at the Waihee Slack event.

Just want to let you all know that Boy Kana'e and I have started Blue Hawaiian Friday Nights at the Blue Marlin Restaurant at Maalaea Harbor 6:30pm to 8:30pm with open mic (meaning you can come jam with me, Pani and Phil).

We started this venue last month and the Friday nights have been pumping. Plenty of grinds and drinks...what's best is that everybody shares their singing with a live backup band and those hula dancers coming back from their gigs from Lahaina and Kihei end up dancing hula.

So I'm inviting all of the Slacker's here on more or just visiting to come on by. Located at the Maalaea Harbor downstairs from the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium.

PS...bring yo' guitar before 8pm...jam session 8p-10p...anybody.

Aloha,

Don Kauli'a

PS...Next month I will be having the Slack Key Artist's perform during that week before the Slack Festival on Sunday, June 22, 2003. So keep in touch and keep slackening...........Don

Eh wasssssssupppp!!!! Don!

Great to see you here! I figgah you've been plenty busy with the Gigs.
That's awesome! What you and "Boy Kana'e" got going in Maalaea's "Blue Marlin Restaurant". My Sister Angie and Her Husband Phil Benoit along with there R&B Band play upstairs in the "Maalaea Grill" (former "Bistro") They're called "Benoit JazzWerks. Anyway, I love that idea of being able to "kanikajammapila" with you guys on stage. Sounds like a really great way to start a "Aloha Friday"

Yup! Saturdays are still happening! Lastweek Saturday was a short but still wonderfully relaxing day of "Waihe'e, Valley kine Slack Key!.....Dr. Eli and I stayed till around 1:00/1:30. "Bruddah" Kevin had to leave early. Auwe! He or should I say they had to do Marathon of Gigs on Saturday. He told me....by the time they was pau, the time was 12:30 a.m.

Tomorrow we'll be in Waihe'e about the usual time. I'll probably be there early tomorrow Morning. After I pau here I going downstairs play my Kika. I have this new Jazzed-up way to do "Maunaloa". But still I need the words in front of me. Alah....I stay dosing-off on da chair in front the Computer. I better call it the night..... "Bruddah" Don! TaroPatch Ohana! See you guys when I see you guys! A Hui Hou!

Right on Bill.

No forget, if you no more nothing to do and feel like jamming, come down to the Blue Marlins...after 8pm it's open mic...open jam time. Let the slack key gang know that everybody is welcome and when you jam you get a free drink on the house.

Last week we had a bunch of hula dancers and couple slack key guys played. Now word is getting out and Boy has been airing commercials about this jam.

Talk to you soon......Aloha, Don Kauli'a

Aloha Kakou,
David and I went to the Blue Marlin for dinner last night - the crab and mushroom stuffed ono was excellent, nice marina view with Haleakala as a backdrop, and the music was great!! Don and his band were playing when we got there and he dedicated "Hi'ilawe" to us and some other of his friends that were there. After a bit a guy named Jimmy from Chicago got up and played some wonderful blues on Don's guitar. Then a van pulled up with Brother Noland and his band!! They were on their way to a gig in Lahaina and stopped by to visit. After a drink and some pupus, Brother Noland and his band mates took the stage and played 2 lively numbers while Don took over the sound board. What fun! If you are on Maui we recommend you stop by the Blue Marlin at Maalaea to see Don and his band on Friday nights. Maybe we'll see you there.

A hui hou, >^..^<

Sure sounds like the Blue Marlin is a must-do for us when we get to Maui in 3 weeks. We should get there on the 14th., which is a Saturday, but since we have no reservations at the hotel until the 15th, we'll have some time to float around. I hope to see lots of old and new friends.

Looking forward to Paradise....
aloha, Julie

Hey Popoki! thanks for the nice comment.

That's so nice.

It's all true gang, if you are on Maui and nothing to do on Fridays, come by 'bout 5:30p thru 8pm and I'll be there playing slack key guitar and a little bit of everything and anything. The Blue Marlin Bar & Grill is located at Maalaea Bay Harbor...just behind of the Maui Ocean Center Aquarium facing the ocean next to the Maui Dive Shop.

Next month is Slack Key Month here on Maui...Milton Lau just confirmed with me to perfrom at the event on Sunday June 22nd at the MACC. The owners of the Blue Marlin has opened Saturday June 21st as well as June 20 Friday for a special 'Ki Ho Alu' Evening from 5pm -closing which means 'open mic/jam'.

You are all welcome to join me...plenty of surprise guest artist's will be there from the lineup for the June 22nd concert...so....
come by.

I'm always there every Fridays from 5:30pm -8pm...8pm to closing is 'Open Mic'.

Aloha...and thanks again Popoki.

Aloha e Don,

You said "if you are on Maui and nothing to do on Fridays, come by 'bout 5:30p thru 8pm". Of course we have something to do. It is to come by 'bout 5:30p thru 8pm. That is our current goal in life. Expect it. Might be earlier than the rest, but you wouldn't mind would you? Might even be a guitar with us. There *will* be healthy appetites for ono i`a. (and some nice wine - tell 'em to stock up :-).

aloha all,

here's a trip report from last night at the blue marlin. three of us showed up around seven pm. the hostess asked us where's we'd like to sit, inside or out, and we said "near the music!" and so we got planted right in front of don and his two compadres. i'd seen the guy playing bass before, but the steel player was new to us. i think that his name is kevin?

the restaurant was busy but not overcrowded. you have a great view of the
harbor and of haleakala. the food is very good and the prices are good. the restaurant staff are friendly and seem to enjoy the music. i think that the owner was there, a haole fellow with a broken wrist? the tables around us had several groups enjoying the music - some seemed like friends of don's.

don's trio is great. the first song we heard was an upbeat version of 'opihi moemoe, and then they went into ka uluwehi o ke kai. they had a nice version of radio hula, and one of don's own compositions about where he grew up in makaha. it was a well balanced mix of instrumentals and vocals.

speaking of vocals, at the end the steel player launched into a couple of falsetto numbers, and he's good! if you closed your eyes, you could imagine dennis paveo. i think that his last song was pua carnation, and he got his voice to do that break at just the right time. it was really sweet.

afterwards don called for people to play some music, and my brother in law john was pushing me to go up there. i was thinking of it, but then a fellow named nick strapped on the guitar. he might be 70, but he had no gray hair. he was accompanied by the bass player and did a great version of "all of me". i forget the second song he did, but it was another cocktail bar song. he tried to get off, but he was hana hou'ed back to do a third number, which was awesome. i've heard it before, but i don't know the title. it's a great number, sounds sort of portuguese to me, and nick was burning up the stage. at this point it dawned on my poor mainland brain that nick had to be someone i shoud've heard of at some point had i been paying better attention. the rest of the trio joined nick to finish this song, and then one of them explained to us that this was uncle nick, who was famous in lahaina back in the sixties.

they then finished up, all four of them, with a great version of folsom prison blues.

there was no way i was going to go play something that night.

don't miss it - blue marlin, aloha friday.

aloha,

Keith

Aloha Keith,
Eh, you got your laptop with you? Just saw you at the Waihee Jam yesterday and I remember your wife saying you are not flying back till Monday. You may have missed the Blue Marlin stage but you had a better gallery at our kanikajamapila. As soon as I got home, (got a good scolding from my wife for being 3 hours late!) had to see if I can duplicate your awesome "Yellow Bird" in drop C but no way. Got halfway though but different beat, similar to my taro patch version. When you come back we'll compare notes again. I was delighted to finally meet you and your wife.

What time did you finish? I don't remember the other guys breaking for lunch at all except for those delicious cookies. Slack Key Bill had lots of competition for the cookies, I think he had only one. I ate three cuz I was sitting strategically right next to the table!Javascript:insertsmilie('%5B:D%5D')

Mahalo Suzie & Keith

The cookies were great!!! It was really nice to see you and Keith again. We all had a great time jamming with Keith.

Keith you sounded great! Hiilawe was the clincher. Looking forward to your return in June. ( along with Suzie. )

Hey ED, We should've let you take the rest of the cookies home. If your wife tasted the cookies first, I garantee you, she would forget that you were 3 hrs. late.

A great day in waihee!

Aloha, Kevin

"Ditto!"

Keith and Susie! It was so wonderful to see the two of you! Mahalo for the cookies! I really did have some competition for your ono cookies. I had to practically, beat everyone away with my guitar! ha! ha! ha! Just kidding....just kidding. "Bruddah" Kevin and I were the last to leave....(around 6:00 o'clock)that evening.

But the "Kanikajammapila" didn't stop there! We continued to "Kanikajammapila" over at Kevin's friends home. There was "Garage Jam"! The total of hours of "kanikajammin", was 15 hours.....15 hours! We began at Waihe'e at 10:00 A.M., went on till 6:00 P.M. and continued over in the "garage"until 1:15/1:30 a.m. Sunday Morning!
How's that for a Marathon of Kiho'alu?

Looking forward to see those of you from here, who will be attending "George's Kiho'alu Workshop"....Especially you Julie! Don't forget our Waihe'e Kanikajammapila all of you now! Get with "Bruddah" Kevin (Oahana Brown) for more info okay!

WEll....it's time for me to hit the sack.....I'm still recovering from our 15 hour "Kiho'alu Marathon" in 'Waihe'e Valley, Maui this past Saturday. A Hui Hou!

hey ed, kevin and bill! we're back here in the mists of san diego. we had a great time, as usual. i wish i were coming out to be with you all and get a chance to meet andy, reid, julie, sarah, and any other of the taropatch ohana. the east coast may have the server, and the west coast may have the luaus, but waihe'e has my vote for being the heart of this group.

ed, it was great finally meeting you. i'm having a hard time with your yellow bird as well. let's work on them next month. you can download the power tab tools i was telling you about from http://www.power-tab.net/downloads.php. let me know if you would like me to send you a tab file in taropatch if you'd like something to look at. (i tabbed up kevin's ka manu, but left it on the computer at our maui place).

kevin and bill, you guys were there until 6?? our friends got to our house just as we pulled in and were unloading the guitar. anyway, we'll be looking for you at the end of june. kevin, good luck with the lesson; i think that it is going to go really well. at least down here in san diego, most players haven't been exposed to the idea of playing slack key and singing at the same time, and ka manu is simple enough that they'll be able to do it.

if you have any spares, can you save one of your CDs lessons for me? i accidentally deleted the copy i made (too sleepy monday morning).

please send our aloha to ed and dan, too,

Keith
