You'll definitely have to check Bruce's case with your luggage, but the thing is made to take a beating. (Remember the old Samsonite commercial with the gorilla? Same thing applies here.) |

Re Bruce's case: for sure it would get the $80 surcharge. The limit is 60 linear inches. I asked about the case and the agent assured me it would be extra. How many times before a Calton pays for itself? |

Terry,
The unfortunate problem with the Caltons is that they are *just* over the limit at 62 inches, measured at the longest, widest and thickest dimensions. So, if some agent with a tape measure wants to get you to pay, there is not much you can do. Now, if Al at Calton (nice guy) were to shave off a few major fractions of an inch, here and there, in the padding thickness, he could beat them for you. His "deluxe" airworthy case has an extra layer of fiberglass composite, but it doesn't add much to the dimensions - it is the padding thickness that makes up most of the size. Of course, that would mean a complete redesign and he would not be able to use one shell (or a few) for all shapes and sizes of guitars. Nevertheless, I smell a market opportunity there.
Won't help us much, though.
See you in about a month, everybody (except the Maui gang - we see you real soon). Tomorrow we have lift-off.

Thanks for the detail Reid.
You ballparked the cost real good.
Now... How much does $2000 to $3000 worth of damage insurance cost (if one wants to fully protect the investment)? I know the Airlines cover only to $600 on regular luggage (and even less on instruments if you read the fine print ($200 to $300 max)) if they cover it at all (i.e. the waiver thing). You can buy single flight insurance (I am told) and long term annual premium insurance (costs lots more), but I do not know the prices. (of course I could look it up on the web, I suppose, but that would entail several hours of research time)
Of course we await the results of your most current research regarding the slug-fest battle of Calton vs United.

Gee, that foldable Miranda that fits into a case just a bit bigger than a cue stick case and still sounds like a REAL guitar is looking better and better. Raymond San Jose |
