While we're on the topic of new releases, Martin Pahinui has a new CD on Dancing Cat, to be released June 17th. It features Martin on vocals and rhythm guitar, George Kuo on slack key guitar, Aaron Mahi on bass and backup vocals, and Bobby Ingano on steel guitar. More info, including liner notes, is available online at:

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Ho`olohe "Listen"
Dancing Cat 2003

While billed as Martin Pahinui's album, it is actually so much more: George Kuo on slack key guitar, Aaron Mahi (director of the Royal Hawaiian Band) on bass, and special guest Bobby Ingano on steel guitar. The significance of this ensemble album is that it is a departure from Dancing Cat's mostly instrumental and often solo instrumental genre. Dancing Cat brings this as of yet unofficially named trio and Martin "Gramps" Pahinui's smooth, classic vocal style worldwide distribution.

When I first heard of these guys playing together, I asked, "Is Martin playing bass?" I figured so since he played bass in Hui Aloha with George Kuo, Dennis and David Kamakahi. To my surprise, Martin is playing slack key guitar on this CD (mostly in C Mauna Loa tuning.) Go Martin!

quote:
According to the liner notes
"If this band ever gets a name, it should be `Olu `Olu Gang," says George. `Olu `olu can be translated into English as "pleasant, amiable, nice."
Whether playing heartfelt ballads or upbeat jams, these guys exude aloha and the fun of performing music together. Martin's falsetto give me chicken skin on so many tunes. I love the traditional sound that these guys have and hope you will too.

You're right on Andy. Martin's new effort is one of my "desert island" CDs. For Martin fans, get the Pahinui Bros video from the early 90's. They're version of "Jealous Guy" is a kick, Martin sings lead on it and it's pretty cool seeing the brothers together.
