For those in the New York area, my kumu is about to start the next series of classes in 'Hawaiian spirituality'. He is teaching about pre-Christian/pre-missionary Hawaiian culture, religion, etc. This is NOT 'huna'...these are the teachings of a kanaka maoli kahuna.
Here's his request: "We need some help in recruiting students for the HO'ALA Class in New York City. The first class is on Sunday, June 22, 2003. The Intro will be from 10 to 12 noon. The first class will be from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. The second class will be from 4:00 to 8:00pm. We need everyone's hustle. Mahalo."
How will this help with ki ho'alu? It will help you understand the music from a Hawaiian perspective, although little of the pre-missionary meles are still being performed. It may also help you pick up on some of the kaona in the lyrics.
This is not for the faint of heart. Some people find his classes truely life-altering. Approach it with an open mind and aloha in your 'ike.
