So I heard Willie K was playing at Don Quixote's in Felton, CA and prepared my stage decoration routine. I spent hours cleaning up my plants and loading them up, spent another hour carefully dressing the stage with my classy pareos, and stuck around for 2 more hours, running some errands until showtime.

When Willie got there he was in a really nasty mood. Instantly, I got a bad feeling, certainly no aloha spirit there!

When the three of them got on stage, Willie plus drummer and bassist (couldn't hear their names) they were so loud I could barely understand what he was saying. What I did get was that, yeah, that Hawaiian stuff at the Aloha Fest on the Wharf in Santa Cruz last Sunday was all good and well if you like that kind of music, but now here, this is WILLIE K's music!!! (Depending on what drug Willie K is currently using!)

Oh, and by the way, DO NOT take any videos with cell-phones, etc, show some respect!

Now I grew up in a family with music. Both my parents were Symphony musicians, all of us kids played instruments, and we sang in church choirs all over the world. My son graduated from the Musician's Institute in Hollywood.

We love music. What Willie K presented tonight was a loud, raucous, unintelligible riot. I could not hear any lyrics, and my ears were hurting. They brought their own sound man, and of course, you can't tell those sound men anything, they already know everything.

What was sorely lacking in tonight's performance was balance. The instruments and the voices needed to be in perfect balance, one playing off the others, etc. That's what makes music. What I did see was a battle of the egos. And a chip on someone's shoulder...

I had to pack up during the second song, left all my stage decorations, and will need to go back tomorrow to retrieve them. If no-one has walked off with them, that is. (That's happened before, someone once stole my huge expensive Hawaiian silk flower arrangement.)

Anyway, I have to say that while the show was billed as "Hawaiian and more", I didn't hear any Hawaiian music before I ran out of there.

This will be the last time I make a serious attempt to see Willie K.

Julie
