This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we are proud to host the return of multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano and Hawai’i Music Award winner Ku’uipo Kumukahi, and the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame Serenaders (Isaac “Doc” Akuna, Uncle Joe Winchester and Kimo Stone).

A self-taught musician influenced by family songs, Hawaiian singers and her parents, Ku’uipo learned to play the ‘ukulele at a young age. She was encouraged to add guitar and bass to her repertoire, but formal music training didn’t begin until later, when she began to take private voice lessons and enrolled in music classes in college. She is a true artist of Hawaiian music. From her family come deeply rooted traditions, knowledge and values which she presents with the voice that has made her known throughout the State of Hawai‘i, the continental United States and abroad.

Known as the “Sweetheart of Hawaiian Music,” she’s won Female Vocalist of the Year honors several times (in addition to her many other Nā Hōkū Hanohano awards). One of her albums received an unprecedented 9 Nā Hōkū nominations in 1994, and garnered 5 awards.

Ku’uipo has performed throughout Hawai’i, as well as on the mainland and abroad. Her mission is to produce, preserve, perpetuate and promote quality in Hawaiian music as well as the music of Hawai’i and its performance, which includes the use of Hawaiian language, and the use of artistry, mannerism and values that are unique to Hawaiian music and hula. She is the current President of the Hawai’i Academy of Recording Arts. Her favorite ‘olelo no’eau (proverb or saying) is something her father used to tell her: “le’ale’a kalaikalai manumanu i ka loa’a” (essentially, “Have fun, and do it right the first time.”)

Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, August 25 from 6:30-8:30pm HST at the Willows Restaurant (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). Those who are unable to attend can watch the live stream at www.pakelelive.com. (The show will also be edited for television and shown at a later date on OC16 TV and www.oc16.tv)

Admission is free and all ages are welcome. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 5:30.) Guests may choose from the full nightly buffet ($34.95) or an a la carte menu created especially for Pakele Live! (and available only during the show), with prices ranging from $5 to $16. Drink specials are also available. Validated valet parking is only $3.

The steel gitarist in the Hall of Fame Serenaders is Isaac Akuna, "Doc' to his friends. because he's a dentist. He's a member of the "Byrd's Nest", along with Alan Akaka, Casey Olsen, Paul Kim, Greg Sardhina, Owana Salazar. Very smooth, and one of the gret steelers.
