For any 'Patchers in Northern California this weekend, you might want to check out the Healdsburg Guitar Festival in Santa Rosa (it out grew Healdsburg). This is a conclave of guitarists and especially custom luthiers, who will be displaying some fantastic eye-candy to temp the GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) in all of us. Information is available at the Luthiers Mercantile International website--www.lmii.com. Aloha, Allen
I usually go for at least one day to hang out with a few luthier buddies and also bring a bit of kanikapila to the event. And this year our Moloka`i buddy, Norm DeCosta will be there as well.
Did either of you happen to hear my friend John Thomas' presentation about the CITES convention at H'burg? It was essentially a recap and update of his Fretboard Journal article, which few people noticed. He surprised so many luthiers and players with the facts of the law and its misapplication that it has created sort of a national sensation. It was picked up (by a H'burg attendee, I guess) and quoted by the Wall Street Journal and other media. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424053111904787404576530520471223268.html He has been inundated with requests for interviews, and his email inbox is overflowing. Amazing what happens when 100 luthiers get excited and mad about something. BTW, he has the next FJ cover story about his visits and playing with Jackson Browne.
