Ah, yes, we heard the first few tracks on the way home from the airport last night. Very much a modern sounding record, but with such a traditional feel - it sounds just like Mike! He sprinkled delightful bits of six and twelve string guitar in there, some killer uke picking, lots of new Hawaiian language original lyrics. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest.

Thanks, Greg, yep, I'll be opening the shows at the Triple Door. I'm really looking forward to visiting the NW, Lynn and I haven't made a trip up that way in too long.

Assuming I don't take a new job that ties me up in the evenings, I'll be there for one or both shows as emcee; I'll be sure to play another track from your CD on our June 2 radio show.
I've heard one cut from Mike's new disc - Fran's assessment is right on the money, wow! |

I purchased tickets for the Eugene show a few weeks ago, I'm looking forward to the Led and Fran show- should be lots of fun. Fran, I also have two requests- "Twelfth Street Rag" for Led and "Maori Brown Eyes" for you! |

Auwe, I think "12th Street Rag" is a problem. Ledward really needs backup who knows the song, and so far I don't have it down. Too bad Mike had to go home for some island gigs, he puts the wall of sound behind Ledward on this one. I probably shouldn't be telling you how incredible their version together is, should I?
But I'll make sure "Maori Brown Eyes" gets on the list.

I finally found a few minutes and some solid wifi here in beautiful Chico, CA. We're between sound check and show, our first visit to the magnificent "Big Room" at the Sierra Nevada Brewery. The manager told us the show is sold out already, that's a bunch of people who are going to have a treat tonight.
We had a leisurely drive up from Lincoln, CA, where we spent the day at the Thunder Valley Casino instead of driving back to the Bay Area. The night before was the Grass Valley show at the historic St. Joseph's Cultural Center. Michael Keene, host of the Kani Ka Pila show on KVMR radio from Nevada City, was the MC, and the audience gave Ledward and Mike a standing ovation after their stunning 12th Street Rag/Sweet Georgia Brown closer.
Our first show was on Thursday in Sacramento at Harlow's, a club that seemed more like a rock venue but one that filled up with Hawaiian music fans from a wide area around Sacramento. It was another ful house with a loud and enthusiastic bunch of fans showing their appreciation for the dynamic performances of the "force of nature" guys.
Be sure to check Wanda's YouTube playlist http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10517 for the clips from George Kahumoku's Hawaiian Country show at Branson, MO. Ledward brought the Kalapana sound to the Ozarks along with others from the Napili Kai Slack Key Masters series.

I've never had the privilege to see Fran perform live, but I did get to see Led & Mike at the Kona Brewing Co. a few years ago. The best way I can describe that evening would be to observe lightning being captured in a bottle. Their live CD had just come out, and they both autographed it. I've almost worn it out.
If any of y'all are undecided, do yourself a huge favor and catch that show!
Aloha, Froppe |
