I appreciated Kenneth Makuakāne's blog post and positive comments on facebook. Read this:
quote:
[the] www.taropatch.net site has been an inspiration and informative platform for me as well as many others both from the islands and other parts of the country. A validation is this list that Wanda made and shared on your site's forum thread. ALSO I just got an FB message today from a guy looking for information on the song Puʻuanahulu and I remembered the discussion thread about that very song back in 2008 so I gave him the info. He was blown away. As a matter of fact that's how I found Wanda's list today. Mahalo!
It has been quiet here with many people getting busy, focusing on other things, and spending more of their Internet time on social media sites like facebook. I know that some of you have told me that you do not wish to have a facebook account. And while I see the benefit of interacting with facebook "friends" and sharing photos and links, finding old posts on recurring subjects here, including some real gems, seems much easier. What I am saying is that Taropatch.net still has a place and has not rolled over yet.

What are your thoughts? Should we breathe some new life here?

Andy

I only use Facebook to keep track of a couple of organizations I'm associated with, so old-fashioned forums remain my primary on-line social connections. That said, I'm mostly a reactive participant anywhere I hang out--sort of lurker who gives the occasional grunt. I do check the Patch every day, though, and any time I can contribute a fact or fact-like item, I do so. And when I'm Googling for some bit of information about Hawaiian music, Taropatch posts always show up in the hits, so this site remains a significant resource, hell yeah.

Andy,

Thank you for starting and keeping taropatch.net going. I use no social media whatsoever, and won't ever have a Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or other network.

Mike Kaawa still introduces me at Honey's as part of the Taropatch.net gang, and I'm always flattered to be mentioned as part of this group.

There is plenty of room for a dedicated group like this amidst all the Twits, Likes and other media. Here you don't get lost with ads for games, hot Russian women, etc. Just da kine maikai Hawaiian music and Aloha! Keep it going fo shoa!

Although I havenʻt posted in a while, I guess out of habit, I check this website everyday. And while TPʻs daily activity level may barely be registering a pulse, I donʻt think TP has run its course completely, at least, I hope not. It is not a fan page of any particular artist, nor does it present a hegemonic view as to slack key and Hawaiian music. While Facebook does provide a means of instant communication between individuals or groups of individuals who were at one time very active on TP, the way Facebook is used by most of the people that I know and with whom I am friends, rarely gets to the level of thought and discussion that we reached at Taropatch in the past.

Over the dozen or so years of TPʻs existence, a sizeable body of information has been accumulating on the various forums through inquiries, discussions or just makana. This has made TP, although I donʻt believe it was through design, an invaluable repository of knowledge. TP provided for us an opportunity to present through discussion a serious alternative view on Hawaiian music in general and slack key in particular. Taropatch has shown through itsʻ diverse membership there are many facets to Hawaiian music and slack key and that not all slack key artists are recording artists or Gabby, Sonny, Peter Moon, Ledward, Keola, or Ozzie wanabees. They are ordinary people with 9 to 5 jobs with families and have to pay the rent mortgage every month.

The question ”Should we breathe some new life here?” is a very good and necessary question to ask at this point in time. I think that having some games and Hot Russian women might help. But I really think that new blood is needed and that there should be a link to facebook, with the caveat that Taropatch maintain itsʻ unique identity and character. Some serious networking is in order.

I still check the 'patch every day or just about. It's how I met Peter M, SirDuke, Ozzie, Fran, and a bunch more. FB can be fun, but it's like going to a big mall when you really want to go to a specialized music store and try really good guitars. The archives are way kewl. I've advised haumana to consult them for insights.

Like others, I check here every day or two, but don't post so much anymore. I tweet, I link-in, but I don't book the face and don't want to. Glad to see it still playing along.

I, also check taropatch each day but haven't posted much in the last couple of years. I would hate to see it disappear.

From far away Atlanta, Taropatch.net is my connection to home. The music and culture are the focus, regardless of where you live or were born, just like living in Hawaii. Besides, where else can you say "da kine" and every one know what you mean? I don't get home often and someday will hopefully get to meet Fran, thumbstruck, and the rest of the TP gang.
So thank you Andy for keeping the site going. I check here far more often than I check Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter.
Mahalo y'all!

I check TP almost every day. I think what drove a lot of folks off is the flaming that happened a few years ago. Andy does a pretty good job of taking care of this problem now. It feels like folks are oozing back here. I use it to tell folks when I'm coming to Hawaii (April 2 - May 3 this year) and to keep track of Auntie Neej's kanekapila dates.

I am impressed by Taropatchers patience and loyalty to visit on a daily basis. Good to know that people are here even when posts are not! For me, it's all about the music and the people (that is all of you.)

Andy,

I'm one of your deepest lurkers, simply because I feel I haven't anything of interest to post--even still, I stop by Taropatch once or twice (sometimes more) times per day. (Taropatch is a main bookmark in my browser.)

I've watched goings-on for over a decade, and things here have certainly changed. But the one thing that hasn't is: Taropatch is still here.

Thinking (other) social-media is the NEW way, is simply wrong in my opinion. I quit Facebook over two years ago (bad security). I don't have a cell phone (thank God). Tweeking, tweeting, or twerking isn't for us old guys.

In this fast-food world, oftentimes it's more desirable to sit down to a comfortable meal with friends. I'll have a nice glass of wine over an energy drink any day.

So, I raise my glass to another Taropatch decade... or two... or three...

Hey Andy

I'm most likely the person most responsible for the "flaming" incident Jack referred to above that happened a few years back. I hope I brought more positive than negative things to the table here when it's all tallied up & my good outweighed the bad.

I spend most of my internet time on FB now days but check in here on TP a couple of times everyday. I've benefited a lot over the years from your website. I've met many of the TP ohana members over the years & continue meet new ones periodically. Whenever I run into people on YouTube inquiring about slack key I still always send them here. This will always be a great slack key resource, Andy

There's not nearly as much activity here as in the past & a lot of it is because of other social media. But it should kind of be expected because it's more of a specialized subject here (Hawaiian music)than other sites where people gather. Hard to find new & interesting topics when it's specialized. I do view it as a good thing though because there's none of the clutter that the other social networks have.

I have one small suggestion that may help a little. Why don't you install a "Like" button? Many times I've posted new topics & have gotten little or no responses to them. It's really discouraging to think or feel like nobody is listening. Lots of times I myself read new topics & I don't have anything to add so I don't comment on it. I suspect this happens a lot. With a "Like" button even the deepest "lurkers" could voice their approval. I think it would encourage more people to post new topics if they at least know it's not falling upon deaf ears. Personally, that alone would make me more active here.

Just my 2 cents worth

Mahalo & Aloha

Flaming? Bah. We get heated cause we care about and love this music so much - but I think we can also accept that we have a wide range of opinions; I don't judge anybody here by what art they like or don't like - I'd STILL like to meet you IRL (and play music, if can).
I tweet, but I don't FB. Message boards have all seen a decrease in activity in the past couple years, it's just an evolution in internet interactivity. But TP is still such an incredible resource - at least once a month, I get on here just to search for some information that I know someone wisely and generously shared at some point. I'm so grateful for that.
