Aloha kakou,

I haven't seen anyone posting about this, so I will...

Mark Nelson will be hosting a number of workshops at Dusty Strings (http://www.dustystrings.com/shop/workshops.shtml) January 29-30, 2005.

Mark's style of teaching is very approachable for all levels. The workshops this past summer were really fun, informative, and a great social event.

Aloha a hui hou,
Chris P.

Thanks for the posting, and the kind comments.

I've been slammed, and frankly I'd thought I'd already posted something! Sheesh!

Well, anyone who knows me knows that I don't actually have a brain.

See ya in Seattle! So what do ya want to work on this time??

I'm just turning to developing the workshops, so I'd love to incorporate your ideas.

For the record: I'm doing 2 slack key sessions at different levels of difficulty, a finger style ukulele workshop (intermediate level) and an Appalachian dulcimer one (that's about playing slack key dulcimer, believe it or not.)

For the slack classes, I'm thinking about either Keola's C or F wahine tuning -- some chords, examples, a song.. and more about improv. But I'm open to suggestions.

You guys are the best!

cheers,

Mark

Aloha Mark -
How about SoCal?
The mountains look gorgeous covered with snow - where the snow SHOULD be.
It would be nice to have you down here!

Eh Mark!

Come down to somewhere in the Willamette Valley in Oregon sometime! It's closer to home, maybe?

Hi Nancy & Maggie -

Thanks for the lovely words. I'd love to get out more -- this hermit life is starting to get weary!

I get to So Cal about once or twice a year for workshops -- last fall I did stuff in Dana Point, Claremont & San Diego. So far McCabes hasn't been interested, to answer that question. Next one won't be for a while, too many thiings going on in my vain attempts to make a living as an independant artist for me to organize anything. I do have some time open in May --- hint, hint.

Ditto Willamette Valley. Again, the problem is one of organizing it. I've done stuff in Portland (Artichoke), ditto Corvallis. So, again, April or May? If you know of a likely sponsor, I'll get on it. It is a relatively short drive....

cheers,

Mark

Aloha kakou,

Mark's Slack Key workshop was this past Saturday.

The morning class was focused on introducing Slack Key and especially Taro Patch tuning to the folks in the group who were new to it. Mark showed everyone the open and closed positions for G and D and had us all making music right out of the gate. That is one of the wonderful things about Mark's classes; making music, as opposed to just playing songs.

The afternoon, intermediate, class introduced us to F Wahine tuning. Again, we were making music. There was a little more focus on theory, I guess. I tend to slip into a bit of a glaze when people start discussing sustained 12ths and augmented 6ths an li'dat. F Wahine has enough similarity to Taropatch, especially the bass patterns, that I'll probably stay in it for awhile.

Mahalo nui loa to Mark and Dusty Strings for this great experience! Next week: Keola.

Aloha a hui hou,
Chris P.
