Aloha all -
I just heard from Heidi Chang that her family is closing the Maunaloa General Store, which they have operated since 1920 in downtown Maunaloa, Moloka`i.
What's that mean to us? Well, if you are going to the Aloha Camp, it means a long ride to Kaunakakai for supplies. As in, wine, beers & pupu.
I'll try to get the skinny on whether the store will be open in February. But maybe best to make that stop in town before coming to the west side.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Thanks Mark.
Sad news indeed, given the history of the store and the service to locals, not to mention the convenience of having a nearby source of supplementary sustenance for campers.
Looks like we'll need to do some strategic planning for provisions this year.

According to Heidi, it will be reopening with new owners soon. So there is a very good chance we'll be able to patronize them in February. Certainly by June.
I hope to get a chance to call in the next few days to confirm this.
Cheers,

Great! All is not lost. Kaunakakai is a long drive for a beer after a hard day of playing, especially if you don't have a rental car (and I'm not even gonna be there this time). Now the bread run is a different story...

Aloha -
Here's an update for all the Aloha Campers coming in February:
The Maunaloa Store has reopened under the new owners -- John, Nani & Amy. They have a good selection of pupu and other commestables, but no wine, beer or spirits yet. It seems that getting a license in Hawaii, even for a 100 year old business, involves an aerial photo. Go figure.
I hope they still have those very cool pig hunter hats...
The new owners are great friends of the Aloha Camp and we wish them all the luck and success. I'll be buying my pupu there for sure.
The Outfitters' Center at the Molokai Lodge has a good selection of wine and beer at competitive prices.
For booze, try Kaunakakai...
See you very soon!

Mark, is the Outfitters' Center actually at the Lodge where we will be dropped off while we wait until check-in? Or is it some distance away in Maunaloa? I have looked at all the web sites and maps, but there really isn't any exact info. Some sites say the Outfitters' Center is "in town"; others give no idea at all, including the ranch's own site.

Dave, Thanks, I found a site that said The General Store is .5 mi. from the Lodge - walking distance. Sound right?

Reid, I think it's actually much closer than that. It's a bit of a walk if you're schlepping a cooler full of ice. Kaupoa provides sufficient, but limited ice for your daily cooler of drinks and water, not enough to ice down a bunch of beers, etc. on a daily basis. I always buy a couple styrofoam coolers at the General Store and make daily ice runs. Hopefully the new owners will have ice. Mark can give you more info.
It's a beautiful and magical place. I know you'll have a great time. I can't wait for summer camp.

Sorry, Reid, I'd missed your question.
The Outfitter's Center one of the buildings making up the Lodge complex in Maunaloa. There's a small store with clothing & stuff, a small display about the Ranch, some offices, the activities center, etc. I'm afriad I don't know the exact location of the wine & beer sales area... it had moved the last time I was there. So ask.
see ya next week. I can't wait, woke up to snow yesterday. |
