Well, I say Puakea Nogelmeier can talk anytime he wants with that velvet voice. He taught one workshop for us. Besides knowing plenty about the language and history, he can dance a mean hula, no shame dance keeping up with Keali` Reichel. I think, though, he no mo gray hair because of that stuff that men puts on they hair. He probably would like an apron, too, because he come from Minnesota, I think. Cold ova dea. I dunno how he developed that lovely voice. But sometimes he writes "odd" songs - Nematoda and the Toad Song. I remember Keali`i telling us that Puakea has no TV at his home in Manoa just on principle. However, Keali`i says when Pueakea visits Keali`i's home where got one wide screen TV, cannot even talk to Puakea because he's got his nose in the TV and ignores everything else like mesmerized.
But even though malihini, I can vouch for Puakea being able to speak dakine. When he lests his hair down, so to speak, he can talk pidgin good as Braddah Ed or da Joka or Menpachi Man.
But I tink his real name is Marvin or something like that. |

Ho, Menpachi Man, I know why you nevah pos' long time befo' dis - you stay writeen one book! Wit' Professah Petah and YPO Chris, you guyzes can write book-book-book!
Amy Tan says in "The Opposite of Fate" that her mother would quote a Chinese proverb that translated to "Loud farts don't smell, the really smelly ones are deadly silent." I confirm I am a small in stature; you may draw your own conclusions. |

On Saturday, I played Hawaiian music for three hours ... on the radio shows. On Sunday, I did more work on a plan to bring Bill Tapia to Seattle in late July.
Does that count? |

In other words - "broken English" here is okay, "broken wind-ish" is not.
Kory's phone calls (as referenced by Duke) are a treat, and they started before YouTube. He plays you what he's been working on; first time I heard his original "Nupepa Slack Key" was over the phone. Momi was kind enough to work out the chords on paper, for those of us who can't figure that stuff out instinctively, and now it's one of my favorite pieces to play, on either `ukulele or bass guitar.
Us guys onny get good fun. |
