Braddah Ed - Braddah Glenn is a handsome dude. You very well could be more handsome, but how would we ever know? It's not like you love us enough to let us see who you are. (Is that good enough guilt trip nagging?) Even if you no mo show us you face, we know what youah heart look like. It look lovely.
And P.S. - Glenn probably tried to pick up some young tenderoni at the drug store by the nail stuff. Good technique, Glenn. Probably better than the monkey face technique. |

We have one hanging in Paul's music room. Printed from a digital file. Twas a gift from Kathleen & Bla. They have an original poster which they found at an antique shop. I beieve the show was at da Blaisdale.
I think the art work on the poster is exquisite, so very fine and detailed, if you see da big picture. The artist is "Barbken". if anyone knows who that is. |

I sure noticed when Jay took us to Tamashiro Market that the price of fish and shrimp was WAY lower than what we pay for here. The menpachi was like $6/lb. The BIG shrimps were about half what we would payover here. Paul ate fish allatime over there, nice fresh wonderfully tasting fish. There have been times he has had fish for three meals a day in Hawai`i. Do not take that wonderful fish and seafood for granted.
Something else you might take for granted in Hawai`i is the respect that children show for their elders. They are kind, considerate, helpful and caring toward older people. They always say "Auntie" or "Unko" or "Tutu". They do not have to be directed by Ma or Pa to give auntie a kiss. And the older keiki watch out for the younger keiki. That aloha is just part of their being, it is noting that has to be specifically taught them. I think it is in the koko. |

I goine seconda Wanda bout da i'a. All da fish stay junk obah hea. I dono why, but eben da salmon from Chile, ono in Hawai'i, stay miko by da time we get um obah hea. Try look da pull date on da fish- stay one week, and da buggah alrady one week ol by da time she reach da shelf! I no, O'ahu get plenny kine junk fish from northwest chain stay week ol by da time she hit da shelf, but Big Island dey goine mark um down if da buggah no was caught last night- an no one like buy em. An no moa pull date- dey goine mark um wi da day da buggah wen get caught. Befoh, used to eat fish bout ebery day- now no can eat um.
Fruits is anoddah ting- I get big kine orchard Waipi'o, but obbah hea only can eat da ones in season cause da ones from da oddah side of da world stay junk. Like buying one peach in Hawai'i- sawdust kine, no can eat. So wintah time, only get apple- apple ship good. An citrus- I get plenny citrus Waipi'o! Evah try eat one citrus stay months old? Junk, dat! I wen try couple times- someone say "Oh try this- these are good!" I wen try, but no can. Junk. All da fruit stay rotting on da ground in Waipi'o- I like cry, sometimes!
Even moa- no can holo holo hea. Oh yea, can drive hours (no mo hoahs!)an go hunt one time in da fall, oa fish polluted lakes. An in da summer get berries- ono! Fall time get mushroom, too. But Hamakua sometimes we like go couple weeks oa one month in da mountain, only bring garlic and shoyu. Plenny foa holo holo in Hawai'i!
An no moa wild places. I tink get one place, about 40 acres, nebbah was plowed here in Lower Michigan. No old growth, wild places within six hours. No moa kai, neither. Get big kine lake look like kai, but malia- no nalu. An cold! Bra, you stick in da toe, nuff already! Buggah like fall off!
Plenny kine stuff I wen miss- smells, sights, sounds, colors- but wen save da mos important fo las. Frens, dere stay no moa mountains hea! No moa eben one small kine hill. Flat li one pancake. I wen live tirty yeah in Waipi'o, so I stay used to small kine terrain, les say. Pali, wailele, lidat. Obah hea no moa. An dat, I REALLY miss!

Can go West Virginia and points south to see mountains, or west toward Colordo, etc. to see mountains, but they are not mountains like Hawai`i. Ko`olaus look like velvet or corduroy. Haleakala look like what I imagine the moon would look like, even with the silver sword. Mountains in W. Va. are round, no points on them, no good pali. Rocky mountains stay pretty naked. They do not look velvety like Ko`olau or Napali Coast on Kaua`i. Greens are greener. Blues are bluer. The sky is more beautiful blue than I can describe, as are the many shades of blue, green and turquoise of the water. Our Lake Erie over hear looks black. And get plenty sanitary pads, used needles and who knows what other nasty stuff floating, not to mention the dead sheephead floating in the water. And the zebra mussels. We get flowers over here maybe 4 months or if very lucky 5 months. Hawai`i has flowers always.
But we do have good sweet corn over here. Good strawberries, good tomatoes. And great peaches when it is the righrt season. Nothing like a fresh picked, fully ripe peach with the juice running down your chin. But that time is very fleeting. Grocery store peaches are worse than junk. They should be put in jail for selling something that in no way resembles a peach. False advertising, etc. |

Howzit erebody,I gotta say since injuring my archilles tendon,da thing I most took for granted is mobility. To walk da beach,go hiking wit da kids, even to shoot baskets wit my son is haad. You know where I goin be wen da ankle get bettah, pickin opihi, walk da reef low tide and go wippin(fishing),Spear fish, walk da sandy beach, but most important just spending quality time wit da ohana. So to all you healthy mobile people out there go get em.And to those not physically able I somewhat know how you feel, and my heart goes out to you.Aloha braddah jay |

Wanda,
One time up at Keanakolu on Mauna Kea I spotted a peach in the top of the tree- that was the only edible peach I ate in thirty years living in Hawai'i...

Don't peaches grow well in Hawai'i? I would think they would flourish, since they grow well in the south here on the mainland, you know, Georgia peaches. But they also grow well here in Ohio. Mmmmmm, good.
Jay - we do not realize how much freedom and mobility we have until it is taken away. I once fell at work and herniated a disk in my back and messed up ligaments and tendons in my legs. Oh, boy oh boy, was I hurting. I was on crutches for a while and at the hospital, sometimes they would wheel me in a wheel chair. I discovered rapidly how ill-prepared many public buildings are to accommodate those who are mobility impaired. The worst offender was one of my contractors. No, none of the industrial manufacturing facilities nor machine shops. It was a social-service agency whose mission was to take folks who were handicapped in one form or another and help give them vocational training. This place sewed women's garments for the military -- Army pants, Air force skirts, Navy pants, etc. A place that was supposed to be an advocate for those who are afflicted had all kinds of impediments to safe and easy mobility. Including rarely shoveling snow off theier walk or removing ice from their walks. I never gave it a second thought until I had to try to overcome some of the barriers myself.
I thought of another thing you guys in Hawai`i might take for granted -- the gentle rains. The rains are warm! And they only last a little while! Not like the pouring, driving, pounding rain over here, the rain that freezes you and chills you to the bone. And the lightening and thunder that rattles the windows. And sometimes hail as big as golf balls or larger.
But I have one question -- what kind of waste water disposal do you have? Sewers or septic tanks or what? Where does all the icky water go? On outer islands in remote spots are there still out houses used or does everyone have a flush toilet? What about cooking heat? Do you use gas or electric? Are there any natural gas wells in Hawai`i? Do any of the homes need to have furnaces?
Tanks, eh. |
