| Eh menpachi,still get,you just gotta know where fo go.Same like you,da spot!Only ting for me,I gotta go ninga.Blend in so as not to be seen.Ah I goin tell you since no can fish dea any moa.Pier 1 and 2,underneat.I rememba da first time I came across one school of white ulua,around 40 of dem inda 20 lb range,swimming all around me.Seems as if da pier is one freeway unda dea.One time wen I was swimming up on dis daak spot,da buggah stay movin.An wot was?one ball akule,undaneat da pier!Dis is true,one day I wen poke four different kind papio,one omilu,one buta(pig lip)one yellow striped,and one good size white papio.Was one of my betta days.Since 911,they're real strict.Last time I came out from unda da pier dey had guns pointed right at me.So much fo da secret spot.Me I like my kole,das my favorite.Menpachi I nevah know akule get real big,like from my finga tip to tree inches past my elbow,das da middle of my bicep!You must get some stories too,big island yeah?Love to hea some.Aloha braddah jay |

Long time ago (1978), wen fish off da ol pier at Whittington, na'alehu side. Get big kine ahi stay swimming by, non-stop. But onli get hand line, 20 lb. test, wit squid fo bait. Mebbe tweny times I wen hook up, but da buggah wen break um ebery time. Only ting I stay catch was dis big pufferfish- same one, time and time again. I tink da buggah wen eat one whole box of squid! Ho, da arm come soa from pull da buggah up to da pier so many time, but I nevah like make um.
Byembye no moa hook, so when back Na'alehu, buy 40 lb. test, wiya leadah, lidat. An plenny hooks an squid. Wen back in da morning- still get ahi swim by non-stop, plenny big kine. Ho, again an again I wen hook up, but ebery time da buggahs wen brake da line! But dat pufferfish- da buggah get one taste foa squid, big kine buggah, like 15 poun. If da ahi no bite, an da squid come back by da pier, he no scaid- he goine wack um, take one ride up to da dock. Anodah box of squid he wen eat!
Byembye, again no moa hook- da ahi when break ebry time dey hook up! I stay tired already- no mo f**k around! I like one ahi! I go back Na'alehu, wen buy 100 lb test line, 100 lb wiah leadah, plenny moa squid. No mo nuff kala fo one pole, but I goine whack one ahi dis time! I go back to da pier- no moa ahi. Next morning- no moa ahi. Plenny time obah da years I wen back, but nebbah wen see ahi dere again...
Sometime I tink (I nebbah try tink too often, but sometimes) "How many big kine ahi does it take to swim past the end of the pier non-stop for 36 hours?" (Only use small kine pdigin wen I stay tinking...) Cause could see plenny one time- no was like single file. I donno- mebe da buggahs wen stay swim in one big kine circle, but I tink was still one massive school, an ebery one one gorilla- I know cause dey nearly wen pull me off da pier wen I get da stronger line...

Maybe if you wen wala'au wit somebody,dey might have set you up wit one rod an reel.Me I'm one true blue pordagee,many times braddah duke told me I have the gift of gab.I don't know about dat but I love meeting people,and talking story.Which brings to mind,it seems people in general are very weary.Especially two ugly buggahs like duke and I,but once you open up,ho da wala'au just flow.I tink wen and if da good lord should call upon me,he might roll his eyes,cause knowing me I still goin be talking to my last breath.What braddah chris I hope you nevah smoke back den,cause if you did no can light da cig,adrenaline flowing hands shaking,I no tink so.Das da kine story I like,da jacques cousteau kine....once in a lifetime.Mahalo fo dat aloha braddah jay |

Now, I stay talk anybody- I gione try, anyway; if dey no like wala'au, das dere problem. But dose days I waz like 16 an kinda shy. Sides, plenny pellah no like da young haoles back den- one makule local wen unload one double barrel shotgun at tree frens of mine hitchhiking back from Honokaa to Waipi'o, an anoddah time foah buggahs wen swing one baseball bat speeding by in one kaa an nip da eah- anoddah inch or two an I would ha been make. An plenny times guys like beef fo no reason; one time get foahteen gang up on me. So dem days I waz a lilbit standoff kine.
Nowdays, if I wen see two ugly buggahs I gione smile and tro one shaka; an if dey no like, well, das dere problem- I jus goine be frenly to someone else. So I tink if I wen see you and Braddah Duke, plenny quick we goine be talking story jus like here on da kalo patch... |

But yea Brah, me too, I steh tinkeen, hoh, mebbe I wen piss off Braddah Pete wid my lolo pos'. But den he not lidat, so den I steh worreh too, I hope he steh arigh. My prayers steh wid him. My braddah had same kine cancer as Pete, an had hard time. Dey waz at Queens same time but dey neva no each oddah. So I no how da drugs can wipe u out, make u depressed, no care to talk to nobodeh. He go down, dey go in da puka, and he go oddah sai of da puka, den wack em, leave da speah down so da uhu fight da speah, den he bring em up. One time one ulua wen steh follow my stringah about 25 lbs. I tinkeen, my tree prong no can hando. So I swim sammo, da buggah still follow. So I speah em anyway. Neva stone em so wen come off. Den bumby I feel bad. Waz jalike one pet was following me. My own pet ulua. Dis is how lolo I am. One time, I wen miss one menpachi in da hole, my speah wen in da hole, hoh, but had someteeng on da speah. I tinkeen, I hope not one puhi. But neva feel like one puhi (oh mebbe I should not type dat), but anyway, wen I wen pull em out, had one beeg nohu on da spear. Scoah beeg time.
Edit: An da ulua neva swim away rite away real fas. He wen swim pass me lil bit and geeve me stink eye befo swimming away. I neva did foget dat! Funneh kine ulua dat waz.

Eh Baritone, no tahk lidat brah. U steh make me sked. If ulua is my aumakua, I had it. I wen catch a few in my ole days, oh, anden around 10 in da lass 3 yrs. Hoh, moah bettah steek to menpachi and aholehole.

I tell em, yea no worrehz brah, I ged one fo u, but usually I get adleese 5. Nomo oil like da yellow-eye but da bugga was ono. Plenneh guys no like coz dey tinkeen da feesh steenk. Cut off da spot an fry em. Ahdunno, az how somebodeh tell me. But my frien he like em betta den kole. I eedum but taste almos like black kole.
One time lass yeeah, we take his 12 yr old grandson go diving but he steh on on bodeh surf board. He waz happy-up swimmin aroun until we wen reach da 50 ft drop an I tell em real serious kine, u watch fo shark, no fool aroun, an no steh around my stringah. Dis is not one swimming pool! Hoh, hees face wen turn calah. But I wen watch em good. Always safety firs. I no can go 50 ft awready. Gotta get tank now. Shark neva come but wen we steh clean fish, dey wen come around, couple of white tips in 4 ft watah. I tell em, see, az wot I tahkin about. I no teenk he going wid us again same place. |

Oh yah, da shark. Shark nebbah boddah me too much- eveh since I wen dive Australia an Fiji. Obah dea da buggas stay like da shark- stay like, Where we goine go? Da Stacks? No, no moa shark las time we wen go, I tink insai channel. No, No, insai channel junk, hardly nebbah see da shark dere- we go outsai channel. Yah, souns good- always plenny shark outsai channel! We go!
Das how da buggahs tink, Fiji. So we go outsai channel, shoa nuff get plenny shark. But dey no boddah. So I stay looking in da pukas, wen see one lionfish all spred out, look like one pictah in da National Geographic. I tink my girlfren stay at my sholder, so I turn fo sho her da lionfish- but no was my girlfren, was one six footah looking over my sholdah, wondering what I stay looking at.
Den Australia- off Cairns dey do one shark dive. Dey tell the tourists-Kay den, you jus goine sit here, no move for noting. Jes sit an eberyting goine be fine. Den dey go back up on da boat (dey no lolo!) an start trowing da buckets of koko an guts in da kai. Byembye (surprise!) plenny shark come, frenzy out, fighting ovah da blood.
Now wen my girlfren wen get certified deah, we wen meet on oddah lady from da middle of da mainlan- she stay scaid of da ocean eveah since she wen see "Jaws" as a keiki. So she goine get obah her feah, take SCUBA class, go fo one shark dive. Aftah she wen watch dese shark teah each other up, she come up so white look like one ghost. I no tink dat lady ebah wen stick one toe in da kai again aftah dat!
Me, I one night divah, cause I stay lazy an like get da fish when dey stay asleep. An I no scaid, cause all my life I stay in da ocean. Cept one time (1990)- da onli time I wen dive Oahu. Was da las day of Lobstah season, an I was doing one Raku (pottery) convention ting on da beach park by Chinaman's Hat- no can remembah da name. Anyway, had to go cause was last day of lobstah season, so I wen jump right in. Some dirty da watah- not li da Big Island! No could see noting. So I tinking I go swim outsai da bay and mebbe mo bettah. Now an den I wen dive down, see how deep I stay- thunk! Wen da light hit da bottom, den I know- no could see um!
Byeumbye I start fo get nervous kine feeling- I like look ovah my sholdah but no can see noting. I nevah wen feel li dat, so kinda spooky kine. I tinking jus waz cause I in one new place, new island, lidat. I nebbah like go in cause onli one, two time in so many yeah I wen get skunked, an I no like.
Byembye da spooky kine feeling wen disappear, den wen I get neah Chinaman's Hat da watah come cleah! Das wen I start fo see da bugs- plenny small kine but get some nice ones too, so I pick up a few. Wen I get enuf fo my frens, I head in. As I waz walking down da beach, get some guys wi one rope in da watah. Dey say- waz dat you diving out dere? Brah, right aftah you wen swim pas da line, we wen hook up one big Tigah! Mus ha been following you! Check um out...

You guys just have swell fun fishing. Over here, no exciting fishing like that. I only ever caught bluegills, 'bout none bigger than my hand, tiny perch, bout none bigger than my hand, cat fish, some bigger den my hand, but not too big and crappies, small kine. One time I caught a walleye, maybe 2 pounds. I ever wanted to catch a muskie. Ho, that would be good fun. One time a girl friend and I went fishing by ourselves at one state park lake. We rented a row boat and went out looking for muskie, supposed to have big ones because the lake get very deep in da middle. We were near the shore and I was casting toward some weeds by the shore trying to get a bass to get mad at my bait (using worms). Next thing something smacked hard against the bottom of the boat, and then I see it swim away toward where I cast, the water parting over top da buggah. It was one humongous muskie, just going wherever he wanted to, not paying me no attention at all. He nokea if boat in the way. I never caught any bass that day except young ones, not too much bigger than minnows. And caught one sun burn.
I wonder if I can still row a boat? I row like heck on da rowing machine at Cardiac Rehab.
But, I am glad I never ran into a puhi.
Auhea wale oe, Peter? Where is our friend Peter? I hope you are huhu at us instead of feeling so poorly that you cannot tell us some stories or tell us how beautiful your day is ova Kaneohe. Actually I don't want you to be huhu either, but that is better than letting this damn cancer dictate how you gonna ack.
Menpachi - last thing I heard from Peter, I think, was about chocho lips. He was trying to be polite in explaining to me what they are. You are right, no lady/woman/tenderoni/hootchie-mama wants Frank Burns lips. Frank Burns is a ferret face. Looking for tenderonis is fine, as long as they are not too tender (don't forget I am mother of two tenderonis myself). But don't find no hootchie-mamas.
Oh, yeah, Duke could weave that magic spell ova da wahines when he go sing and play guitar. But Jay could too, but he don't need to. He got one very nice wahine at home, beautiful and full of aloha, and take good kea him and da keiki.
Our daughter leaves tomorrow for Brazil. She going learn how fo be Podagee. Only rite ting since maddah one honorary Podagee. One mont' in Brazil, I hope no go dose topless beaches Ipanema kine. Mo bettah go dat big stachu Jesus top da pali. |

Braddah duke,you buggah.Ok den,just adding to da story of da white tip.Wen I used a rock fo load my compressed air spear gun,da rock wen slip as I had da shaft almost all da way inside.Actually da spear shaft wen all da way chru my hand,nevah panic,just was'nt as easy as I taut.Since I use an extra long swival barb,das wat made it harder to get da shaft outa my hand.Den I was good to go,so as I'm swimming along someting tell me to look back,I seldom look back,and wen I do deas dis white tip right behind me about six feet back.Eh das my amakua,but wait my stringer stay back about 30 feet,so how come dis buggah so close.I watch em make one pass,he come back more eratic on da second pass,on da third one he like act,you know like how we push out awa chess fo look tough.Dis buggah get his back arched,look weird,so I switch my gun to low and gave em one bip,peyoong gone.I tell you dey fas.And da tigah,yeah was big.His dorcel fin was as tall as me.Duke nevah tell you guys my love fo dive at night...alone.I know nevah dive alone,especially at night,but wat I haad head.Anyway I stay divin fo bugs (lobster),so wen I get close to da end of da pier I usually shut my light,cause sometimes get da haba patrol paak dea.So I come out real quiet and look up,it's real daak and I see two fallas talking story while fishin.Dey nevah notice me but I nevah tink a dat,I just wen ask em "wat you guys wen catch anyting" I felt bad cause braddah wen almost fall in da watah,one was so scade he must of wen fall back cause I no can see em anymoa.Da guy dat almos wen fall in said "brah wat da #/$*&% you doing down dea,you scead da @ %#$/ out us" I divin wat you tink.So I get outa da watah and wen go wala'au,you know me,true blu podogee.By da way since dos boys nevah catch notting I wen give em half my catch,dey was happy.Catalina is one totally different divin experience,ovah dea she drop off real deep lidat,hundreds of feet.But wat I like is da kelp beds,wen you dive down under da canopy of kelp,she's eerily daak,but comforting.In fact da kelp helps keep da watah malia.So wen you look underneath da only light is from da pukas in da ceiling of kelp,so wat you see is rays of sunlight shootin down chru da kelp.And since I free dive,I just dive from one ray to da adda.Only ting no string one floatah,buggah get tango,game bag on da weight belt is da way.Da folks I dive wit trip out cause all of dem use tanks,me free diva.Da only time I use tanks,is wen dey give me fish or lobstah...eh tanks.Dat place talk about bugs,hundreds,my special place get one cliff dat drop straight down hundreds of feet,on da face of dat drop off hundreds of lobstah's.Da abalone choke,black,green,red,pink,and white,das da abalone's kala from shallow to deep,pink being da most sought aftah cause of tenderness and taste.Me I go fo da black ones cause at low tide no need even get in da watah,just make like you lookin fo opihi.Da reason people no like da black ones is da kala and toughness,but you can scrub off da black.Back den I worked on da fuel dock and da restaraunt,so I clean em up and put em in one hobart slicer,quatah inch is good.Aftah dat give em lickin lilly bit wit da wooden mallet,not too much,jus enough fo make em tendah.Dip em in da egg battah den da panko,den deep fry dat buggah.And you know wat? dey nevah even know was da black abalone,"jay abalone is good,wat dis da green ones?" ah...yeah K-den pau fo now,you know dis chru blue can go on and on.Aloha braddah jay |

Wow, laulaus, ju' like I sittin' on somboddy's lanai lisning to all dis fish wala`au. All I need is shohts, tank top, slippahs, an one cold one.
I went fishin ony once, and I nevah catch natten. But my faddah wen tell me my granfaddah used to go fish off Hoonaunau wen dey usta live Kona in da 40's. I herd dis story like tird hand, but one night, dey was castin line from da shoah, and dey wen see one light undah wattah. Den da lines wen "fewwwwwwwwwwwww" and took off. Den da lines broke. Den dey took off. |

Braddh Jay, I stay li you- I no like da tank wen I catch bugs. Lobstah like um in close, plenny surge- weah big fish no like come eat um, and nobody like go grab um. When get tank, BC, all dat kine, you too slow, an da surge goine take you too much. Sides, no can fit in da small kine crack, no can slide obah da shallow pohaku- hard fo manuvah when get tanks. Same ting wi da stringah- you get one line, goine hook up on da pohaku. So wen I like get da bugs, I goine carry da bag in my han.
But da tank stay ono wen you jus like go look, specially old, deep reef li dey get in Austrailia, Fiji, New Caledonia, Bay Islands of Honduras- to name a coupla favs. Bay Islands- Roatan- das da bes! I wen get certified wen I was foahteen- nowdays dey goine ask "what level you get? Only open water one?" Brah, wen I wen get certified no moa level- you stay certified, oa you no stay certified. I get obah tirty year experience all obah da worl, and you goine say I no can go cause I only open watah one? I tell you wat- we going take two tank an dive, an if you run outta aih befo me (cause I one big guy, yah?)den you goine take me any kine. Nebah yet I wen fin one buggah use less aih den me!
Now da rant stay pau, so back to catch lobstah. One glove, I can go either way. Mo hard fo swim, but wen you like grab da pohaku so da surge no take you, den stay good. Kinda clumsy an mo hard fo hold da lobstah, but den again you no scaid of da spine. But you grab um good, bare hand, so dey no can move, da spine no goine cut you.
Anoddah way I stay like you, braddah Jay- mos times no can fin nobody like fo go out wi me in da middle of da night, when da bugs stay partying. So at leas nine times outta ten, I goine by my own self. Funny kine ting, do- I nebbah wen get no problem fin someone fo eat da lobstah! Cause I get one secret- I stay allergic to shellfish. But I love fo scoop prawn an catch lobstah. So I get plenny frens wen I like go out, but nobody like come in da watah- dey jus goine hang on da beach, make one fiah, get da watah hot...
Guava, I get small kine cuda story too- mebe you kno I get one ahupua'a neah Waipi'o, hard fo reach cept by kayak. Mos times I paddle out early in da morning, when stay malia, but da trades nebbah like die down till sunset time. So I like launch jus at dark, paddle back to Waipi'o wen no moa wind, nice an cool, real choice time fo be out on da ocean. Onli problem alldatime da cuda like smack da boat WHACK! Kinda spooky but you get used to it.
So one time one cuda wen jump up, bite my elbow! Den da buggah no like let go! I trine fo shake um off, but no can. So I wen open da hatch, smack um widat. Den da buggah wen drop insai da boat. So li you I wen eat um- an onli small kine puka in da elbow, no baddah too much.
I wen see plenny kine funny stuff wen I paddle night time- one time waz like one lightning bolt undah watah, nebbah did imagine wa dat could be...
