The fishcake is probably either kamaboko (if it's pink edged and half-moon shaped) or chikuwa (if it's brown edged and has a hole in the middle of it). I've heard it's possible to make 'em at home, but my family's only ever bought 'em. I've also heard it's made from the same stuff as surimi or imitation "krab."

Braddah Al get mo' hea dan Guavasunrise's slurpy guy. An I tink Braddah Al's girigiri mus' be hidin', cuz I no can see 'em, but I know he get 'em.

An, on one noddah note, I finally got my shave ice. Twice. Tursday night at da Espaniola/Peterson concert, and yestahday at da Aloha Na Kupuna festival. Brok' da mout' an' hit da spot.

Braddah Jay,you remind me of when I was a laborer back in the late 60's. The Japanee forman was on vacation when I started and when he came back He let everyone know he didn't like Haoles 'specially one form New York. One day in front of the Super and some udda guys he told me " Hey Haole get me water stick" I would not let him know I didn't have any idea what it was so I walked to the tool shed. I came back to him and said "Eh Masa what size you like ?As I showed him three different size Levels" All the guys laughed and Masa and I became Primo drinking buddies.

Yeah. I remebah when could buy penny candy at da stoah. Now days I don't even know why dey have da pennies. Not good fo nottin but give change back from dollah naineenain if no tax.

I had whatchu call nostaljah foah da penny candy from hanabatta days. We get one stoah stay sell dakine. http://www.sweetiescandy.com/ Dis was at fort of July wen da `ohana come foah cook out. So I hele da stoah an buy turtee dollah woof candy. I get Ice Cubes, Bun candy bars, Zero candy bar, Sky Bar, B.B. Bats, Slo-Poke, Suggah Daddy, Good n Planny, Chuckles, dem caramel tings, round wit white stuff inna middle I tink called bulls eye; an dem nodda kine what be coconut kine tree cullahs, pink, white an brown each wrap up in da cellopane. An dem nodda white nougat kine wit tiny blobs of chewy jelly kine candy, ahdunno what da name. I tot would be good fun have da family gathering foah talk about small kid time. Was good foah talk story, but da candy, not as good as I remembah. Or maybe trouble is I no remembah so ackyurut. I used to love dem ice cubes, but now eat one wanna make me sick. None of it tasted as good. "And I blew the blood sugar out of this world, sky high. Well, good for a nostaljah trip, yeah? Sometimes, you jus cannot go back.

But this stoah have all da old kine, dem wax lips and dem wax soda bottles full of sickeningly sweet liquid and dem pixie stix full of kool aid kina stuff. Do you remembah fizzies? Dey had da pop rocks, no Mikie did not splode his po`o from eating dem.

But, toosie rolls, nomo fat, nomo salt.

What was you favrite candy when small kid time?

And do you remembah da co-cola in da small bahdohs, dat soda pop most ono of all, cold outah dem machines at da gas station takin route 21 down to W. Va.

Now I oni get glucola foah da blood sugah tolerance test.

But I have one question -- what kind of waste water disposal do you have? Sewers or septic tanks or what? Where does all the icky water go? On outer islands in remote spots are there still out houses used or does everyone have a flush toilet? What about cooking heat? Do you use gas or electric? Are there any natural gas wells in Hawai`i? Do any of the homes need to have furnaces?

Tanks, eh.

Aloha kaua!

Peaches will grow in Hawai`i in some of the cooler areas at higher elevations. But where the temperature is good, it seems to be too wet, so there is a lot of blossom drop, and the young fruits get fungus and mold easily. Cherries and plums will grow in the higher elevations, and Waimea even has a Cherry Blossom Festival.

Hawai`i has a wide variety of black-water solutions. In Honolulu, Hilo, and (I expect) Lahaina, there are municipal sewer systems.

I grew up with cesspools and lua (pits) being the norm. Many people just had a pipe feeding into a lava tube. But now the law requires septic tanks or composting toilets. As the technology has improved, composting toilets are gaining in popularity.

Some people do still have outhouses.

Cooking heat: Some homes use natural gas, some use propane, a few use kerosene or alcohol stoves, a very few have wood-burning stoves. Most in town use electric or natural gas. Many homes use electric for lighting, refrigeration, etc and natural gas or propane for cooking. We used to have gas refrigerators so we did not have to run the generator all the time or else do without chilled foods.

Some people buy their power from the electric company. Some generate their own with diesel or gas generators, some use solar or wind systems to power their homes.

Hawai`i, being a chain of young volcanic islands, has no natural gas. We do have some limited use of geothermal energy. People and businesses with solar or wind powered structures are able to sell excess power to the power company. IMO, it would be excellent to strive for 100% of homes being set up to do this.

Some homes, especially at higher elevations have furnaces or fireplaces. I have seen frost on the ground in the morning in Mt. View. One of our neighbors here in Hilo has a fireplace. Here on Hala`i Hill, in the winter we catch all that heavy cold air off the summits of both Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa when it sinks down the mountain slopes at night. It hits our hill and "pools" around our homes.

As my home is an older one beautifully designed to utilize natural air flow to stay about 10 degrees cooler than the ambient temperature (GREAT most of the year!), it can be bloody freezing during a cold winter when the weather outside drops into the 50s! One year I just shut down every room but the kitchen, nailed blankets over the kitchen windows, and turned on the electric stove. My daughter and I slept on futons in the breakfast nook.

A little "toiletrivia": I was taught that "lua" is properly used for an out house, while "lumi pau pilikia" is used for the WC. "lua" literally means "pit." On a somewhat related note: "puka," I was taught, is a hole that goes all the way through something. So, the holes in my ears in which I hang my earrings are "puka," while the pits in which my eyeballs sit are "lua."

Mahalo Leilehua for telling me all the stuff that I have wondered about. I was certain there would be no natural gas there, since it is the result of decay of vegetation. Where there is coal, there is natural gas, there is oil and where there is oil, there is coal. In W. Va., lots of folks have gas wells on their property and get free gas, plus royalties for selling it to the gas company. And where my mom used to live, there was natural gas in the well water. Made really bad tasting coffee.
