Eh Kaneohe girligirl,
I kinda miss da fall weda, wen da seasons change lidat. I would watch da aspen trees turn gold anden alla da udda trees change orange-red up da foothills up in da Rockies, anden get even mo color wen you go moa mauka. It's a good time fo fly fish, da wadas low anda fish stay mo hungry.

I rememba, I rememba da sweet smell of logs burning in da fiaplace -- those days were good, good to snuggle up wid your honey. But now I tink naaaaah! Kaneohe's mobetta fo me. But when I retiah my wife n I talking like eh mebbe can go live mainland half da yeah and at home half da yeah coz my dawda goin be working mainland lidat. But we'll see, depends on how da economy goes. If da economy is bad we goin stay home no waste money. If good den we go try.

School started and get plany work. Was just like I was gone one whole yea, but no mo sabbatical. Da teaching is good, what is tiring is alla da committees and da meetings wea we bang heads. As usual we already planning fo next yeah lidat. Eda da students looking younger and younger oa my eyes gedding older and older. Excep fo da Samoan guyz, da students small now dayz. Da teachas lidat plany guyz goin retiah preddy soon we all old. Get won new crop coming.
Ahui hou.

Nomo can smell leaves burning. Gainst da law now. But onaona. Dat smell sure make remembah befo time.

We get one fiahplace in da lin room. Not much make fiah. Makes one big messy mess in da house. Skead popoki will 'splore da fiya, she mo niele den me if can believe. Plus gotta stay awake until pau ahi so house no burn down. But den what if I get sleepy need go hiamoe? I might be, just MIGHT be, enough makule dat I nomo stay awake late. Mattah of fact, ha-ha, I nevah was a stay awake late person. I get up early.

I speckt not mo den 2 weeks get frost ovah heah Cleveland. But I love autumn. So beautiful da whole worl. Da trees oh so pretty; da krissanfamums all kine pretty cullahs; all dem ducks, geese flyin in da sky. Even da golden rod an ragweed an iron weed nani. Watah staht to taste mo bettah, nomo algae bloom da city watah supply. Cool enough for cook soup and stews. Mmmm, love soup. Can go pick appose right from da tree. MacIntosh da besest. Can go get da fresh cidah from da cidah mill to Sunrise Fahm anden get da hot fresh apple frittah, slice appose in rings lidat an den dip in battah an deep fry like tempura. Ho da ono. But it time den fo staht Christmas shoppin. Ui-ha!

Me ke aloha

Eh Bruddah Hiram,
No feel too bad. You not da only won who wen miss da boat on dis won. You know da saying “kenna judge won book by its’ cova’, dat really applies to dis topic – you neva wen read oa go tru da whole tread – das okay, 50 oa moa pages of bad spelling is kind of daunting. But fo me anden quite a few of da udda locals, dis topic “Broken English is it one turnoff?” iz da mos important one in da history of taropatch so far. Dis won as dey say iz cathartic, it certainly changed da makeup of taropatch. No udda tread even comes close, brudda.

I been hea long time, so I get won good idea of wot haz happened on dis entire forum. Fo da firz time you get local guyz talking meaningfully to udda mainland guyz. Talking bout good times, talking bout bad times; talking anykind. It neva happen befoa on da taropatch until dis posting.

Da local guyz came out of da lurking mode to wala`au. Do you know da significance of dat? Mos local guyz on da mainland stay inda backgroud lidat, unless dey running fo president den dey gotta step up.

Wen Duke wen post dis first time, he neva expect what waz goin happen. He was jez inviting alla da mainland guyz who no unnastan pidgin eh bradda, eh sistah, you can join in da conversation too. Sorry if you kenna unnastan, but go try wait, we go help you unnastan. Dats it.

If dea pidgin sucks dats okay, dey goin get betta eventually oa dey goin give up anden go into lurk mode, but at least get chance for engage wid dem. We don’t all talk good, bud at least we try.

Alla da local bruddahs who now live on da mainland now lidat, like bruddah Ed “guavasunrise”; brudda Glenn “menpachiman”; 1st nation brudda Chris “ypochris” and alla da Seattle bruddahs (if I foget anybody sorry eh, but I’m shooting from da hip) saw dis as won chance to talk pidgin -- das dea firz language wid da udda guyz . Now moa people den eva, guyz who neva wen go Keola’s oa George’s camp coz de no moa money, stay talking to each udda lidat and dey stay connecting on different levels wea it neva wen happen befoa.

Admittedly da writing part kinda hard coz nomo spell check anden depending upon wot island you from, you get different styles and words lidat. Da mainland guyz dea trying hard fo learn and de are actually doing preddy good coz da buggas staying in contact and working wid da local boys and local girl. Itz not a good idea too pudem down, coz dey trying hahd at oua invitation fo ova tree monts. And daz why peepo getting defensive lidat.

But go try get on da boat, get room.

Is common sense all that common?
Things I learned in conjunction with slack key:
Portagee bean soup
Portagee sausage
Poi (how foa eat'em, ono you know!)
Spam musubi
Katsu
Shave ice (ice shave whatevahs)
Adobo
Pancit Canton
OK, nuff food talk.

In the Hawaiian community around these parts, I've seen the tremendous work that goes into making community. It's easy to lose track of that in the clicker-punching, mall-going world.
The good attributes I've observed my folks would have called "old country" in the best sense of the term. Humans need to be reminded that we are based on the land and bound to the seasons and responsible to care for well being of our fellows.
Jus' press.
