Just a little note from Kona... This is the peak of whale season. We have been seeing a lot of them, so make sure you keep an eye on the ocean as you drive south from the airport, and you might also enjoy taking the following route which will avoid a lot of construction work that is being done on Highway 19 in the center of Kailua-Kona...
From Kona International Airport: 1. Head south on Kupipi St toward Keahole St 0.3 mi 2. Slight right at Keahole St/Keahole Airport Rd 0.6 mi 3. Turn right at HI-19 6.2 mi 4. Turn right at Makala Blvd 0.6 mi 5. Turn left at Kuakini Hwy 0.7 mi 6. Turn right at Palani Rd 112 ft 7. Continue on Alii Dr Destination will be on the right 4.9 mi

Wishing all of you travelers an easy, uneventful trip... I just checked the weather in Kona, and it may be rainy for the first part of the week. Go to http://www.konaweb.com/konaweb/weather.shtml and click on the Hawaiian Water Vapor Loop link.
The good news is that this means the vog will leave us alone! By the way, the detour I gave you will take you right past a music store, should you think of anything you need. "Music Exchange" is located in a little shopping center on the Kuakini Hwy right before you reach Palani Rd. and turn downhill toward the ocean. "Kona Wine Market" is in this same center, should you decide not to visit Costco for your stash...
Oh, boy! See you all soon! Aloha, -Konabob |

Aloha from beautiful Keauhou.
Annie & I araived late last night. This mornig was sunny but cool, now it's cloudy & coolish. Perfect, if you ask me. No whales sighted yet, but the honu are frolicing right below my lanai.
Surf's up a bit, too.
The final schedule will be handed out in your packets. Yes, there are changes from the one on the website (one of them made this morning before I even got a cuppa joe).
Moana is doing a lei class, I am doing a uke class, and Kona Bob is teaching Scandanavian men's hula. Just fooling about that last one.
A hui hou.

Mahalo to all who participated in the nightly kanikapilas. For those of us who left Sunday we snuck in a final kani Saturday night. Forgive me for not remembering Uncleʻs name (he was the Resortʻs bar entertainment guitar player and somebody who does please help me), I just wanted to express my mahalo to Uncle for playing with us, encouraging us to continue and be pono, and talking story. And I was finally able to play along with Mark Nelson in a jam session. Mahalo Trev for your mandolin paʻani too.
Mahalo to the hula dancers -- ladies and men (although I missed the "bottom" when Larry did his hula with Auntie Julie). Having dancers always adds so much more. And Iʻm shua the ladies greatly appreciated "da local boy". Mahalo DJ.
Mahalo to all the first timers. You may not have known the mele (songs) but was good fun to have you play along. I ʻmemba how hard was when not knowing the mele and therefore unfamiliar wen to change chords. There was plenty mele new to me, and the learning experience continues. Mahalo for helping choosing songs, and also allowing the seasoned kani players to go off the book. I use the term "spot lighting". Hopefully you were inspired as I was 3 years ago to keep playing post-camp. Of course for me was bit easier having Bruddah Sil push me. So for you folks not having someone, should you continue on your own, youʻll have even more of my respect. You can always start a kanikapila with friends at home, and no shame if you no play da hawaiian mele -- any music playing with other folks is ono. I sing non-Hawaian songs playing ukulele.
Mahalo Clay for the wonderful paʻani. He may never had heard the mele, but he shua knows how to paʻani.
Mahalo Larry for filling in the bottom. Always great to have a bass player. And Julie for making shua we folks no get da dry throat, or got grinds for strentgh to keep going. And especially for da kin to keep us loose. Rememba da moʻ you drink da bettah we sound.
Mahalo to our co-hosts. Mahalo Don your Hawaiian Cowboy. Sil & I are just in awe. And OMG no papah. Mahalo Mark. Bruddah your leo kiʻekiʻe just blew me away. Was good fun to share hosting (less pressha) and hear different takes on mele.
Mahalo Auntie and DJ. Auntie mahalo for being there staying up with us and especially sharing your aloha. Bruddah DJ mahalo for taking care of Auntie, your mele, your hula and your aloha, too.
Again mahalo to all. Was plenty good fun.
A hui ho

Aloha Kakou, As usual, everything was WONDERFUL! You can take a look for yourself if you would like to see my pictures (there's a bunch!). You need to send me your e-mail address for me to send you the invitation/link and let me know if you want to see the camp pictures (people and performances), Big Island pictures (scenery, local flora & fauna), or both. If you want a copy of one or more pictures of yourself or whateva, let me know and I will e-mail you the files. Susan (your local camera bug) |

Aloha to all fellow and 'would be' campers. What a wonderful week. I, as a novice ukulele player, am extremely grateful for the generosity shown by some outstanding players during our almost nightly kanikapila sessions. What wonderful Aloha everyone had. Now that I have my blue book, I can't wait to explore some of the songs we played.
As many of you know, I had a camera growing out of my face much of the time. Here is a link to the photos I took during camp: http://web.mac.com/markalan/AMC/AMC.html

edit: I fixed my web site after ʻpage not foundʻ reports.
