I've been to both kanikapila and they are not to be missed if you have the opportunity to attend. |

Aloha Friends & Family
Just a friendly reminder that this Sunday is the Bishop Museum Kanikapila which will run from 1pm to 4pm. Pack a cooler with soft drinks & a picnic lunch along with the keiki & or mo'opuna to enjoy an afternoon of good old traditional Hawaiian music. Bring your instrument & instrument cable. Sit in the kanikapila circle or play from afar, main thing is that you experience the mana of this ohana style gathering.

PS: If anyone is interested I (Duke Domingo aka "sirduke58" on YouTube) will be there around 11am & share some ki ho'alu (slack key) with those interested in learning or sharing. Perhaps others would also like to come early and share their mana'o in various other instruments?

It's KANIKAPILA time again!
Aloha Kakou,
It is our pleasure to bring you Kanikapila at Waimea Valley, and Bishop Museum this month. All levels of musicians are encouraged to attend and participate in these very family friendly events. At Kanikapila, the emphasis is on sharing and perpetuating traditional style Hawaiian music that was commonplace in our islands many generations past. Our motivation is to resurrect the old Hawaiian concept of sharing mana'o (knowledge and experience) of our culture through music and socializing.
Whether you are an aspiring or an accomplished musician, come and join in the fun, make musical connections, and join the ever expanding network of the Hawaiian music community. Find others to play music with throughout the month and in between these events. Come to experience this enjoyable gathering as a participant or spectator.
Pack a picnic lunch for the Bishop Museum Kanikapila and bring the keiki or mo'opuna to be exposed to beautiful traditional Hawaiian music. Plant the seed in hopes that the younger generations will pursue the music of their heritage. For the Waimea Valley Kanikapila, outside food is prohibited, but there is a concession stand where food and beverages are available for purchase. It is important for us to inform everyone that alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the premises for both kanikapila events.
Please note that we do not allow outside amplification to ensure proper volume etiquette to all kanikapila participants. A top of the line sound system is provided by the hosts, and we are able to accomodate everyone who wishes to plug into the system. Please bring your own instrument cord if you wish to be amplified.
Both events are filmed for broadcast on O'ahu public access television, Olelo channel 52 where Kanikapila 2012 us a weekly series. It will also be uploaded to Youtube for your enjoyment, and so you can share with others.

Plenty fun at the Bishop Museum kanikapila yesterday. The circle was big enough that we just barely got around one time in the three hours of playing, and the talent level made the time just fly. The Abrigo kids are growing in both height and talent, and mom and dad have learned to herd cats with style and flair - getting a big bunch of musicians to behave just isn't that easy but they make it look like it is<grin>.
The word seems to be getting out since there were visitors from Ohio and Japan along with nearby spots like Kaleponi.
Big mahalo to the Abrigos for keeping this gathering going and growing.

Hi Fran! Thanks for coming by to join us on Sunday at Bishop Museum. Can't wait to get the video edited up to share on 'Olelo TV as well as Youtube. Will post the link here when it's uploaded. We had hoped to make it to Kona Brewing that night to see Uncle Led, but after we got everything wrapped up and loaded from kanikapila, we were too pooped. We have a busy weekend, but we're gonna try and make it this Sunday. Maybe we'll see you there? ~the Abrigo 'Ohana |

Aloha, Lanet, what a wonderful event your family has created. It was inspiring to see all the folks arrive with big smiles and instrument cases, a very big very happy family gathered around the music.
I'm not surprised the tank went empty, a lot goes into a gathering that big and that well organized. we'll be at KBC on Sunday. This will be the last KBC show for a couple of months, since Ledward will be bringing joy to the mainland for a nice long run. Good thing we still have Honey's and the Abrigo Ohana kanikapila!

Thanks again Fran. It was great seeing you and your wife again at Kona Brewery on Sunday. We just had to go see Uncle Led before he went off to remind the world how beautiful traditional Hawaiian music is! We look forward to seeing you again at the Bishop Museum Kanikapila on April 29th. If you are up for the drive, the Waimea Valley Kanikapila is a little different, and equally enjoyable. If you do decide to come out, it would be best to try and beat the traffic by leaving town before 11 a.m. Arriving early will give you the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Waimea Valley before the kanikapila begins. Waimea Valley Kanikapila will take place on April 15th.

Aloha Kakou
Greetings fellow members of the Hawaii kanikapila network. It is our pleasure to remind you all that this coming Sunday April 15th the Abrigo Ohana will be hosting their monthly Waimea Valley Kanikapila from 1pm to 4pm. As always we encourage all level of players to attend this family oriented event centered around the perpetuation & sharing of traditional Hawaiian mele. Come as a participant, come as a spectator, come to share your hula, come to share your mana'o (knowledge), come to wala'au (talk story) the main objective is to come on over & join the fun.
A top of the line sound system will be provided by your host & they are confident that they will be able to accommodate everyone that chooses to plug into the system to be amplified. Please bring your own personal instrument cord if you wish to do so. It is our policy that outside amplification will not be allowed & we totally appreciate your compliance. This is to insure proper volume etiquette to all kanikapila attendees & to reduce issues with audio recordings. Exerts from the event will be video taped for broadcast on public televisions Olelo channels. A waiver will need to be signed before the videographer can use your image for airing.
Outside food & beverages are not allowed on the premises of beautiful Waimea Valley but there are refreshments availble at the concession stand......Hope to see you there
Mahalo & Aloha The Abrigo Ohana Tim, Lanet, Timi, Emily & Quinn |
