Greeting fellow musicains of Oahu. This Sunday August 26th the 2 time Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominees Abrigo Ohana will be hosting their Bishop Museum Kanikapila!!! It runs from 1pm-4pm with a soundcheck at 12 noon. All levels of musicians are encouraged to attend and participate in the age old custom of gathering to share the mele (song), mana'o (knowledge) and mo'olelo (stories) Join us in our pursuit to perpetuate traditional Hawaiian music as a participant or spectator. Bring a friend, a colleague, haumana, kumu, kupuna, keiki, mo'opuna & or ohana for a great FREE day of awesome music. Pack a picnic lunch too. Parking is plentiful & free. So is entrance to the kanikapila. However, normal fees for entrance into the museum still apply.
Your gracious host the Abrigo Ohana are providing a top of the line sound system that is capable of accommodating everyone that wishes to plug in. They only ask that you bring your own personal instrument cord to do so. Outside amplification is prohibited to ensure proprer volume etiquette to fellow kanikapila attendees & to avoid audio issues concerning recording for Olelo TV & YouTube. The event will be videotaped & exerts will be broadcast on Olelo TV throughout September on Saturdays at 12 noon. Rest assured that your image will not be aired unless you sign the waiver that will be circulated at the kanikapila.
This event, as always, is a family oriented gathering. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Mahalo in advance for your compliance. E Komo Mai !!!!! Hope to see you & your guest there.

Greetings fellow members of the Oahu kanikapila community. E kala mai for the tardy kanikapila notification. Sept. 16th will be the 3rd Sunday of the month which means it's time for the Waimea Valley Kanikapila. If you are reading this you are cordially invite to join us in this fun filled ohana oriented event. Bring your instrument to sit in the kanikapila circle to share the Hawaiian mele that makes you smile. Come to share a hula. Come just to wala'au with those in attendance. Or just come to listen & experience a wonderful day of free music by everyday people trying to make your heart smile. There are plenty of seats
The kanikapila will run from 1pm to 4pm with a soundcheck at noon where spontaneous music is known to occur. Your host the Abrigo Ohana (2 time 2012 Na Hoku Award nominees) will be supplying a top of the line sound system capable of accommodating in everyone who wishes to be amplified. All that is required is for you to bring your own personal instrument cord. Please note that if are uncomfortable, being amplified is not required. Outside amplification is prohibited in order to insure appropriate volume etiquette to all kanikapila attendees. Proper volume levels are essential to ensure there will be no audio issues for the purpose of recording the event for airing on public TV's Olelo 52 channel. Exerts from this event will be used for airing but rest assured that your likeness or image will not be used unless you sign a waiver that will be circulated at the kanikapila.
Entrance to the kanikapila held at the beautiful & spacious Pikake Pavilion is free. There is also a lot of free parking. However admission to the park's walking tour still apply but at a reduced rate in conjunction to the event. Outside food & beverages are prohibited at Waimea Valley but a nearby concession stand can provide food & beverages for purchase at very reasonable prices. Alcoholic beverages are strongly prohibited and we thank you in advance for complying.

Join us for this ohana oriented event that runs from 1pm to 4pm with a soundcheck at 12 noon. Your gracious host, multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award nominees the Abrigo Ohana encourage all levels of musicians to participate in this throw back gathering reminiscent of the good old days when people of all walks of life were drawn to backyards to share their love for traditional Hawaiian music. Join the kanikapila circle, sit & play on the outskirts if you are bashful, sing a song or share a hula. Come to listen to the beautiful music or to talk story with the many good hearted people. Grab the kupuna, keiki, mo'opuna & pack a picnic lunch.(Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, mahalo in advance for your compliance) There will be ample seating, picnic tables & loads of nearby free parking. Entrance to the kanikapila is free but admission into the museum still apply.

Greetings fellow musicians & Hawaiian music lovers on Oahu. You are cordially invited to attend the age old island tradition known as kanikapila. An ohana oriented gathering centered around traditional Hawaiian mele where people of all walks of life meet to share music, dance and manao.(knowledge) This being the beginning of the holiday season, you have an opportunity to sandwich 2 kanikapila around Thanksgiving!!! First is the Waimea Valley Kanikapila being held this Sunday November 18th then the following Sunday which is the 25th it will be held at the Bishop Museum. Both run from 1pm to 4pm with a soundcheck slated for 12 noon where spontaneous jam session have been known to occur. Players of all levels are encouraged to participate. There is no admission fee to either kanikapila but entrance fees to the valley & museum still apply. Please note that there are discount fees to the valley on kanikapila days.
A top of the line sound system will be provided by your host, the multiple Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominees "Abrigo Ohana" They are confident that they will be able to accommodate everyone who wishes to plug into the system. All that is required is for you to bring your own personal instrument cord. Outside amplification is prohibited to ensure proper volume etiquette to all fellow kanikapila attendees and to avoid audio issues on recording for the purpose of usage for YouTube and broadcasting on Olelo Public TV. Please note that your image will not be used for airing unless you sign a waiver which will be circulated at the kanikapila.
Gather up the keiki, mo'opuna, kupuna, friends & acquaintances and join us in music and dance. For the Bishop Museum Kanikapila you can pack a picnic lunch & soft drinks. At Waimea Valley outside food is prohibited but there is a concession stand near by where refreshments can be purchase at very reasonable prices. My island vacation has come to and end as I head back to the Mainland. A big mahalo to the Abrigo ohana and everyone else at the Bishop Museum Kanikapila. It was the highlight of my vacation and I look forwards to returning next year if my schedule allows. Tom

It was nice to play with you a little bit before & during the kanikapila. You are a good ki ho'alu player & I hope you find people in Georgia to share it with. It was cool to meet your Mrs too. Looking forward to your next visit back home. Do you use tablature? If so email me because I have a few I can share with you.

Please join us on December 16th for the final Waimea Valley Kanikapila of 2012! This has been a wonderful year of sharing, thanks to all of you who attend every month and support the beautiful music of Hawaii. We hope to see you this month, and many more times next year. That's right, the Waimea Valley Kanikapila will be continuing in 2013, with some very exciting additions. Join us on the December 16th, 2012, from 1 to 4 p.m. to hear what they are.
Kanikapila is FREE, no admission is required to attend this event. Touring of Waimea Valley is through a separate entrance. We would like to thank Waimea Valley for generously adding Kama'aina and Military Appreciation Days to our Kanikapila Sundays; this means that you can tour the Valley at the greatly reduced rate of $5 for adults, and $2.50 for children if you have a valid Hawaii state or military ID.
For those of you new to Kanikapila... Kanikapila is a traditional Hawaiian music jam session. All ages and skill levels are invited to participate in the perpetuation of the mele (music), and the tradition which it was passed down from generation to generation. Since September 20, 2009, Kanikapila has been held on third Sundays at Waimea Valley. Beginning January, 2012, Kanikapila has been held the last Sunday each month at Bishop Museum. These events run from 1 to 4 p.m. and are FREE and open to the public. We have amplification, so bring your instrument cable of you would like to plug in. Kanikapila 2012 is a television series airing weekly on O'ahu channel 55, Saturday's at 12:30 p.m.
