Learn to play the sweet and soulful guitar sounds of Hawai‘i

Workshop sessions in Slack Key and Ukulele will be held November 21, 2009 $45 a session.

To sign-up please email Cyril directly at: cyril @ cyrilpahinui.com or call 808-722-8575.

Dennis Kamakahi, Donald Kaulia, Leabert Lindsey, Sonny Lim, David Kamakahi and Kunai Galdeira join Cyril Pahinui, traditional master of Kiho'alu or slack key guitar to instruct in the kanikapila style. Nana ka maka; ho ‘olohe ka pepeiao -watch with the eyes, and listen with the ears. Thus one learns. This traditional method provides the perfect instruction to this rich tradition. Students of all levels will be guided through simple exercises and solos to create the "slack key" sound.

Slack key can be played on any guitar, acoustic or electric. The term refers to both the musical style and the myriad ways the instrument is tuned. Cyril teaches several traditional tunings and focuses on those that originated in his family. In addition, you'll learn the use of vibrato, harmonics, slurs, harmonies in thirds and sixths, legato playing and other musical ideas that have helped create a distinctive guitar sound. This lush finger-picking style will add new sounds and flavors to your entire repertoire.

Students must bring their own guitar or ukulele.

First of all John, I miss your rotating profile pictures.

Second, all I remember was November, 1967, Basic Training, Fort Lewis. There wasn't that much Snooooooooooooooooooooooow!!!

Third. Sounds like a good time for a Poor Man's Music Camp (PMMC). Guys, music, fun.

I can guarantee it will be cold and probably raining. That part of town is on a hill. The weather /wind comes right up from the bay. You'll need more than your warm heart!

Not to be too disrespectful but REAL men go to basic training in Fort Jackson! haha! I really hated that gas mask BIG time - it's a bitch if you wear glasses, for one thing

Can't wait for this event - looking forward to a trip up to Seattle! For those of you pondering going to the reception dinner, just ask anyone who attends the one down here in L.A. the night before the Southern California Slack Key Festival and they will tell you it is SUCH a fun and memorable night! I mean, even for the artists, it's something special. How often do you see Lehua Kaapana (Ledward's sister) playing with Makana, Peter Moon Jr and Sonny Lim (on bass), much less Uncle Cyril getting up to dance hula??

If anyone has any memories of the reception please post it here! Let's pack the Seattle Town Hall!

All this, and a Heavy Pupu performance, too! They are hands down my favorite Hawaiian metal band.

Seriously, this sounds wonderful. Big thanks to Cyril et al for putting it together. What a terrific line up!

Dusty-- I'm half way, if you need to warm up on the way up or down.

Cyril was in Seattle recently to take care of last minute details...and when he talks about the festival it's easy to see that he's very excited about bringing all these musicians together for the weekend's activities.

This should be great fun, since until now we've only heard about events like this...and they've always been taking place somewhere else. It's definitely Seattle's turn!

Well I thought it was near Montana Wyoming, which is (of course) directly across the border from Wyoming Montana.
