Hey Bay Area folks: Just a quick reminder that tomorrow, Sept. 19, is the 2nd Annual Napa Valley Aloha Festival: http://www.manaleohcf.org/aloha%20festval.htm . The event is free! Festivities start at 9:45A, with headliner Uncle Cyril Pahinui performing at 4:30P.

Other Taropatchers performing that I'm aware of are Faith Ako (with Jim Cramer backing her on slack key) at 12:30P, and Hiram Bell at 1:50P. Last year, to everyone's surprise, Uncle Cyril got up from signing CDs to play bass with Faith and Jim. That was really cool. In addition, my friends Jim Romano and Paula Rudman, aka "Pulama," are performing at 10A. Jim is a very good slack key player and together he and Paula have beautiful vocal arrangements.

I'm bringing my instruments just in case there's some impromptu kanikapila. Hope to see you there.

Aloha,
Doug

Hi Doug
It was nice seeing you at the festival. Uncle Hiram was great all day.
The performances were wonderful. Uncle Cyril and friends were great on
stage. Too bad we didn't get together earlier to jam some.
Uncle Cyril's workshop today was great. I went to the morning session,
and there were six others in attendance. Taropatch.net was well
represented.
Aloha,
Les

It was hot. But the event overall was very cool.
I saw Doug(Thanks for the water, Doug), Les and Louise and a few other friendly faces in the crowd along with a lot of happy faces I've never seen before. People were excelllent and the event was very successful. Thanks to all those involved, especialy Maneleo and The Manaleo Hawaiian Cultural Foundation. All the fine performers and halaus were wonderful. The show started with a pule led by Kumu Liko Puhi and Kumu Kawika.
Shout out to Ka Nalu for their brilliant set. Pulama soothed the crowd, Makalii was ono, Na Leo Pumehana and Faith Ako are always sweet as haupia, Kupukalauieie was invigorating, Hanapaa was awesome. Thanks also to Ariel for ukeing. I guess my set was pretty good too.

Uncle Cyril played with three fine musicians. JJ Ahuna from the big island played beautiful electric bass. His soft and smooth style set the tone for the group. On steel slide guitar was Greg Sardinha who now hails from Kailua, Oahu. But when we were kids, we both lived up on the Waiamao side of Palolo Valley. Was nice talking story about the past with him. And his silky sweet sound on the steel was like icing on the cake. He was featured in the song "Singapore" and pa'anied with perfect phrases in open-C that transcended the song and offered us a glimpse of one musicians sheer joy of making music. On the ukulele was the talented nephew of Cryil, Kunia Cabalera. This guy is a wizard on the uke and equally outstanding vocally. The crowd could not help themselves from stirring and yelping to his falsetto mastery or his virtuoso uke solos. And then there is Cyril Pahanui in the midst of this talent pool. Soft spoken yet voluminously proud of his heritage, he gave the audience what we longed for. Nahenahe style Hawaiian music steeped in tradition and dripping with aloha that only the old storytellers know how to deliver. Hana hou...! What a treat.
Kumu Kawika and his halau o Keikialii finished the show with an awe inspiring and powerful performance. The men and women in his group exude confidence, pride and true Aloha spirit. I felt proud to be a hawaiian man and proud to be a part of this auspicious Hawaiian event.

Stay Tuned...
