You Tube, week of Jan 3, 2010
Kawika shared a wonderful film with us about how Andy Cummings came to write “Waikiki” I always love to hear the story behind the mele. Thanks, Kawika. We not only miss the island, we miss you, too! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3JZymKmDuA
Leilani Rivera Bond with haumana Hi'ilani Leinani Tuazon Aloha 'Anianiau http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBJWmflgkiQ

Cyril Pahinui in Santa Cruz for New Year’s, playing “Hi`ilawe”. Beautiful couples hula with Denise Markowitz (yes, Norm Markowitz’s dear wife), and her hula brother, Garrick Gondo. And better still, it was Denise’s birthday! What a fun surprise to dance hula for Cyril Pahinui singing Hi`ilawe on your birthday, unknown to you. Wee-ha. Gotta love surprises, yeah? Patti Maxine on steel guitar, nice, oh so nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESsAae9G97I
And here he is playing “He`eia”. By the way, the steel guitar player is Patti Maxine, who really adds her sweet sounds to the rendition. A mele ma`i for Kalakaua. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eHhrSvtvA0
Our friend Josh Sumibcay (Mauibuilt75) over on Maui playing “Hi`ilawe” at the Maui Marriott. Listen, when he sings about “I ka nui manu”, you hear the birds singing, chirping. How cool is that? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvqhvKyJ8Qk
Here is Josh singing a beautiful version of “Ku`u Home o Kahulu`u”. Check out the swell looking microphones. Hoh, he has some recording studio, no? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6oBsQSzMUs

Lorna Lim “Ka`ano`i Pua”. What a sweet voice, what an `ohana full of talent. But listen to her talk story at the beginning of the piece. She makes a brief mention about Charles Nahale, a kind and sweet man who we met on our very first visit to Hawai`i. He was a musician on a cruise we took, playing all alone in one of the out-of-the-way lounges. Charles is the one who turned us on to Hawaiian music, that is past what we knew of Iz. He turned us on the Cyril, the Cazimeros, etc., etc., etc. To Charles Nahale we will always be grateful. I know he is a Big Island boy, from Kona side. He still cruises on NCL ships – last I heard from him about a year ago, he was in the Caribbean, still playing Hawaiian music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQk7RzNkKig
