I'll admit it: I still buy CD's even though I have an iPod, especially Hawaiian CD's because of mele.com. Mahalo Auntie Maria!

I buy CD's because I find the quality of MP3 or the iPod AAC files to be considerably worse than CD. Even the highest 320K rate of mp3 is not good enough but most of the downloadable stuff is at 256K or lower with a lot of it being at the awful 128K rate. However, with modern recording practices destroying the quality at the mastering stage (re: loudness war), I guess the relative quality difference between MP3, AAC, and non-compressed CD audio is rapidly shrinking.

Also the CD usually gives me a nice booklet and artwork to look at, thereby giving a lot more depth of understanding the music (especially if it has lyrics and translation).

And, of course, I try to buy the CD's at a performance event directly from the artists, to give them the greatest benefit.

Just my perspective on this dynamic issue.

(I haven't felt that religious in ages - thanks, L.)

I honestly don't have the aural sensitivity to notice much difference between the various formats and I am rarely fortunate enough to find a concert close enough to allow me to buy directly from the artists, but the CD insert is a big deal to me. There are many albums available on iTunes and Amazon that I would consider buying since I am using up enough shelf space on CDs already and I'm trying to digitize my library in anticipation of downsizing our living space, but they either don't have a digital booklet available, or it includes only cover art. Having the lyrics, translations, and artist's thoughts is very important to my enjoyment of the music, and I am astonished at how few digital CDs include them. Occasionally you can find that information on an artist's website, but not always. Surely it can't be that difficult to include a pdf along with the mp3 files?! Why are they so rarely available?
