I have been encouraging one of my groups..."Dakota Blonde" ...(not from Hawaii), to learn a Hawaiian song.
With am upcoming, sellout, Valentine show at Swallow Hill in Denver, (and rehearsal where we can bring in songs to learn) coming up fast...I would love to suggest a Hawaiian love song.
Any Suggestions?

My favorite is Waiulu or sometimes called Waiaulu. Can listen to Brother Sam (olu143) on You Tube.
Another one that I really like is Kealoha. |

Kealoha is an excellent choice. But if they want to explore kaona in a love song then I might suggest "Ku'u Ipo I Ka He'e Pu'e One". For my wife and me, it's "our song".
Also "E Maliu Mai" |

And of course, there is "Ko Aloha Mau a Mau" (everlasting love).
Keoke and Herb have recorded version(s) of it recently.
(With a calypso or "sonny chillingworth" kind of rhythm)
It is one of my favorite Dennis Kamakahi songs.
He does a 4:4 version on his most recent release, if I remember correctly.

I'm so relieved to find some Hawaiian songs of love! What was I thinking? If it's not about a beautiful place, there' s a good chance of an island love song. Thanks for getting my mind and songbooks opened.
I'm starting out with the most obvious 450 Hawaiian love songs, and will close off entries after the first 1,000,000,,,,and narrow to the 4 most likely to be get airplay in Honolulu, Denver and Nashville. or till Andy (or the CBS censors) put the lid on our champagne and chocolates.
Of course, with two weeks to learn and then teach it, well if it betta only have one or two verses! English maybe 3. I'm getting good with dat old mainland mumble. Pidgin maybe 4. Heaven forgive please, for we know not what we say.
And the winner is...??? But since this is a place for learning, and friendly skies of Aloha, you're welcome to add your song to favorites--in case if we miss a bright Hoku.

My suggestions would be either "Kawohikukapulani" or "Ke Kali Nei Au" (Hawaiian Wedding Song). Jesse |
