Dennis Lake and I both have small amplifiers available for steel players who may not be able to bring their own. Please contact Dennis directly if you want to use his, and contact me if directly if you want to use mine.

That is very generous of you guys.
Of course, I was hoping to borrow yours, Bob... but I will defer to someone else.
But if no one claims it, I'm yelling "dibbs!"
BTW: I am working on schedules over the weekend. So watch this space.

I have posted a draft schedule for the February 2011 Aloha Camp online.
Please note that this is a preliminary draft and subject to change. The final schedule will be distributed in your Welcome Packet.
As always, creating the schedule is something of an art; it is impossible to please everyone. So, please, no whining if you find you cannot take each and every class you want to.
Heck, I make the schedule and even I have conflicts....
In other news: We have exactly one slot open in Dennis Lake's wonderful Build Your Own `Ukulele Class. So if you have ever wanted to build a snazzy new uke, do not delay. Go to the website and sign up today.
We are still accepting reservations for the camp, too.
It is all at www.alohamusiccamp.com.
Looking forward to seeing you soon! |

GGGAAAAHHHH!
Alaska Airlines had a special! San Jose, California to Kona, $150 each way, $300 roundtrip, but since I've been out of work for a month (The start-up I was working for was bought out by MicroSoft, making my stock worthless...) I did not think I had the funds to go learn at the knee of Steel Alan Akaka in Feb. So I passed up the Airline Special, only to learn today that I would get a bonus from the old company.
Aargh, my timing is off as usual! Run screaming off the Pali!

Flap your arms really hard. Remember, the world is really flat and gravity didn't exist until Newton.
Reality is all in your head, anyway.
And money is only numbers on paper. (Or numbers on paper no longer backed up by pretty rocks, if you happen to lament the demise of the gold standard.)
Know why Obiwan wasn't Irish?
"Use the farce, Luke."
I sure hope you can come, it's going to be a grand camp. |

No conflicts, but more free time than I'm used to with only one intermed slack. I may have to pay attention or something equally drastic <G> |

Hi there -
Good point.
The C6/Am7 is the one.
E C A G E C
I'd not seen Alan's particularly idiosyncratic 8 string C6 tuning. It's actually a C13, the Bb gives you the dominant 7th, and all kinds of interesting diminished chords. Notice that the top 6 strings are the same as the C6/Am7 tuning.
Our lad Slip will no doubt chime in on this topic, as he is both a student of Alan's and a proponent of yet another version of the C13 tuning.
Stay tuned.

Aloha & Happy New Year.
We have had a bit of a shift in the staff for the February Aloha Camp. Charles Ka`upu, who was to teach oli and kane hula, has had to bow out.
So Keola has asked our dear friend Liko Puha to help out, who has graciously agreed. Many of you know Liko -- he taught our first classes in oli back in the Kalani Honua days. He is well loved for his work in Northern California, his adopted home. If you've been to a concert or festival, you have probably seen Liko. Sweet man.
Liko will be teaching oli and kane hula for the entire week, as well as handling the protocol for the camp. And I'm sure he will bring his genial aloha to the kanikapila as well.
http://nowelo.org/
Also, thanks to Neej's noodge, we have added a second intermediate slack key class. Jeff Peterson will now teach a beginning class and an intermediate/adv class. Keola's switching to intermediate and advanced slack. (As I said, the schedule is subject to change.)
Sound like fun? You bet.
Yes, there is still room, Virginia. Sign up now while airfares are cheap.
See you soon!

Liko?!? Huzzah! Huzzah! That is so great. He is a really wonderful man, and can that man hula!
And thanks for Alan's C6th, Mark. I pulled my post before you replied, as I thought it would just make people worry. Anyway, for those of you who ARE contemplating new strings before camp. Here are some guidelines I worked out using the online string tension calculator: http://www.bangzero.org/stringtension/
If your lapsteel is 25" from nut to saddle, here is a set of strings that are nicely balanced.
PL means "plain steel string" (http://www.juststrings.com/plainsteeljuststringscomguitarsinglestrings.html) and XS means "wound stainless steel string" (http://www.juststrings.com/stainlesssteeljuststringscomguitarsinglestrings.html)
e, .014" PL == 30.55# c, .018" PL == 31.81# A, .022" PL == 33.61# G, .026" xs == 31.18# E, .032" xs == 33.51# C, .040" xs == 32.13#
For a 25.5 long scale, change the 22 PL to a 20 PL and change the 32 XS to a 20 XS
Rogue EA-3 owners... You know who you are! Use this set:
e, .017" PL == 30.29# c, .022" PL == 31.96# A, .028" xs == 30.5# G, .032" xs == 31.87# E, .038" xs == 30.72# C, .050" xs == 32.58#
