That's what it looks like - sometimes used as a sub for water chestnut. |

I was thinking maybe they meant water chestnut. Mahalo for the help. Jicama I can have; water chestnuts too much potassium.

Al - potassium is very good for the pu`uwai but bad if you have kidney disease, which I do. I am working very hard to avoid the need for dialysis as long as possible. |

A little bit goes a long way. Lethal injections used on Death Row are potassium. Unko Paul |

Maggie - keep on eating your bananas. Potassium is good as long as your doctor does not tell you your potassium is too high and you need to be on a low potassium diet. The reason I have to worry is because my kidneys do not clean out excess potassium and if it builds up too high, it can cause my heart to slow down too much and cause defibrillation. He tells me that is how the lethal injection works. Also potassium is what they used to stop my heart for by-pass surgery. Twice already my potassium has been dangerously high and I was hospitalized overnight to drink some kind of polymer to leach the potassium out of my system. Yuck. |

Ain't much of a middle ground, either. After eating low potassium with Auntie for the past year, my Doctor's office called & said my potassium is too low & I should eat more bananas. Unko Paul |

Eh, Paul, bananas good fo'ya! I don't know if it's because I live on the West Cosat, but papayas and mangos are always around in the natural food stores. A great breakfast is half papaya with cottage cheese in the hole. Yum! I had a low potasium event during my last chemo, and I took pills for a while. Ask the doc, eh? May help. |

um... sorry slipry1... got to disagree - papaya with poi in da middle, nothin mo betta -- except maybe fresh Hayden mango from Lahaina town. Don't know where any of that stands on the potassium meter... but they all broke da mouf.
And... Dang Auntie Wanda - you one fighter! Good on you - finding all these ways to keep playing. Besides, when you really think about it, bananas aren't that good anyway... |

The last thing I'll do is ask a Dr. for pills! The pharmacist is out to get us all, he ain't nobody's friend! If I have to eat 50 pieces of fruit a day to avoid another pill, so be it.Every pill has side effects, nearly all of 'em ruin kidneys or liver, some ruin both. They gave me 2 weeks worth of arthritis pills, then wanted to check my kidneys before giving me more. I canceled them at once. "If these don't kill you in 2 weeks, we'll give you some more."
